Common Internet Marketing Terms - Christian Home Based Business

To wind up our series on internet marketing for beginners, I thought I?d share with you a list of some of the more common terms you?ll hear online.? Familarize yourself with it and you?ll be ?speaking the language? in no time!

Internet Marketing Terms

adwords ?- Google?s pay-per-click platform that allows advertisers to place paid ads that come in the search results for a corresponding keyword phrase.

adsense ? a program by Google where website/blog owners can place Google ads on their site and earn money whenever someone clicks on an ad.

affiliate marketing ? promoting other people?s products as an affiliate and earning commissions when a sale is made through the promoter?s unique affiliate link.

analytics ? statistics provided by either your hosting company or Google (Google Analytics) that gives you specifics on how many website visitors you have, how long they stay, how they found you (keywords used), etc.? Analytics are used to help you improve your website?s performance.

blogging ? blog is a shortened term for the two words ?web log.?? Blogging is the process of keeping an online journal, where the entries are displayed from newest (at the top) to oldest.

backlinks - links that point to your website/blog from another website/blog.? Backlinks are looked at as ?votes? by the search engines and can help improve your ranking in the search engines (depending on the quality and quantity of backlinks.)

content - ?Content is information that is presented via written, audio, or video format.? Today, online business owners use content on their websites, blogs, in their newsletters, on the social media platforms, etc.

call to action ? the process of asking your reader to take a specific action.? A call to action may include asking for an email address to subscribe to a list, clicking on an affiliate link, or clicking on a ?buy now? button to make a purchase.? Each piece of content should have its own specific call to action.

domain name ? the name of a website with an extension of .com, .net, etc. on the end of it (the homepage address.)? For example, internetmarketingplrcontent.com is a domain name.

ezine ? an electronic newsletter or magazine, offered via email or the internet.

ecommerce ? purchasing/selling online.? You will hear the term ?ecommerce site? often which refers to a website that sells products of some sort and has a way for visitors to purchase those products (such as via a shopping cart.)

email marketing ? marketing (promoting products, services, etc.) to a group of people via email.? Email marketing has become a very common way to stay connected with your niche market.? There are email management services such as Aweber and Get Response which make the task much easier.

forum ? an online discussion platform where people who have a common interest can gather and communicate with each other through messages that are posted and responded to.

guest blogging ? writing a blog post and having it posted on another blog owner?s site.? Guest blogging can be an effective way to market your business if you guest blog on blogs that are related to your niche, thereby allowing you to reach your target audience.

keyword - the main word(s) or phrase that is typed into the search box of Google and used to find the desired information/product.

keyword research ? the process of identifying which words/phrases people put into the search engines to find what they are looking for.? This information can then be used to decide if there is enough of a demand for the information/product/service under consideration to warrant offering it.

link building ? the process of acquiring backlinks to a website or blog.? Links are essential for bringing in traffic to a website and improving your search engine ranking.

list building ? the process of collecting emails and compiling a list of people who are interested in what you have to offer.? This is done so you can stay in touch with your target market, educate them and promote to them.

marketing ? the process of promoting your products/services.

marketing plan ? a plan of specific methods to promote your products/services.? The plan may include target dates of completion, or may be a less structured outline of marketing strategies to promote your business.

opt-in ? the process of someone giving you permission to send them information by ?opting in? or giving you their contact information so you can email them.

seo -? stands for search engine optimization, which is the process of modifying your website to improve its search engine ranking.

url - the address of a particular web page.

viral marketing ? passing along information from one person to another.? Many online business owners use viral marketing in their marketing campaigns today.? They may write a report or an ebook (and in it, include a link to their website or a particular product page)and let it be shared for free.? That way, their message gets in front of many people ?virally.?

visual marketing ? marketing that makes use of images, colors and graphic elements.
