Bomb blast kills 3 NATO troops in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Three NATO troops were killed Sunday by an improvised explosive device in eastern Afghanistan, the Western military said.

Roadside bombs planted by insurgents remain the single biggest killer of NATO troops in Afghanistan. The devices also kill and wound many Afghan civilians.

Eastern Afghanistan, which lies near Pakistan's tribal areas, has been a major battlefield during this year's warm-weather "fighting season." Many American troops are deployed there, but the military statement did not disclose the nationalities of those killed Sunday, or give the precise location of the explosion.

Attacks in eastern Afghanistan against U.S. and other Western forces are often carried out by the Haqqani network, whose fighters cross over from Pakistan's Waziristan tribal area.
