EU proposal to protect bees stirs hornets' nest

BRUSSELS (AP) ? An attempt to protect Europe's bee population has kicked up a hornets' nest.

On Thursday, the EU's commissioner for health and consumer policy, Tonio Borg, proposed to restrict the use of three pesticides ? called nenicotinoids ? to crops to which bees are not attracted.

The three pesticides were clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiametoxam; the crops from which they would be banned include sunflowers, rapeseed, cotton and maize. The policy would take effect July 1 for the EU's 27 nations and be reviewed after two years.

But while environmentalists welcomed Borg's proposal as an important first step, Borg's spokesman, Frederic Vincent, confirmed that some countries reacted unenthusiastically, preferring further study to immediate action. He declined to identify them.

Marco Contiero of the environmental group Greenpeace said Britain was firmly opposed, and Germany and Spain were either opposed or wanted more time to consider.

Luis Morago of the advocacy group Avaaz, meanwhile, condemned what he called "spurious" British and German opposition and said 2.2 million people had signed an Internet petition calling for a comprehensive ban on the pesticides.

Beekeepers have reported an unusual decline in bees over the past decade, particularly in Western Europe, the European Food Safety Authority says. Bees are critically important to the environment, sustaining biodiversity by providing pollination for a wide range of crops and wild plants ? including most of the food crops in Europe, it says.

"This is the first time that the EU has recognized that the demise of bees has a perpetrator: pesticides," Morago said. "The two-year suspension on pesticides could mark a tipping point in the battle to stop the chemical Armageddon for bees, but it does not go far enough."

Matthias Wuethrich of Greenpeace agreed that more needed to be done to save the bees.

"A ban on a few hazardous pesticides is only a very limited safeguard," Wuethrich said. "The disappearance of bees is just a symptom of a failed agricultural system based on the intensive use of chemicals, serving the interest of powerful corporations like Bayer and Syngenta."

He said the solution was a "paradigm shift to sustainable agriculture and modern eco-farming practices."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Now it's time to say goodbye to "Epic Mickey."

The interactive division of the Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it is closing Junction Point Studios, its Austin, Texas-based developer that created 2010's "Disney Epic Mickey" and its 2012 sequel "Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two."

Disney said the closure is part of its "effort to address the fast-evolving gaming platforms and marketplace" and to align its resources with its key priorities.

"We're extremely grateful to Warren Spector and the Junction Point team for their creative contributions to Disney with 'Disney Epic Mickey' and 'Disney Epic Mickey 2,'" the studio said in a statement.

Disney acquired Junction Point in 2007. The studio was led by "Deus Ex" and "Thief" creator Warren Spector.

Both "Epic Mickey" games were set in a twisted version of Disneyland called Wasteland and featured Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as protagonists.

"I said to myself as Junction Point embarked on the 'Epic Mickey' journey that, worst case, we'd be 'a footnote in Disney history,'" Spector posted Monday on Facebook. "Looking back on it, I think we did far better than that. With Mickey Mouse as our hero, we introduced a mainstream audience to some cool 'core game' concepts ? and, most especially, we restored Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to a place of prominence."

The first "Epic Mickey," which was released only for the Nintendo Wii, was the sixth best-selling game the month it was released in 2010. "Epic Mickey 2," which was available for the Wii, as well as the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360, didn't crack the top 10 when it was released last November, according to gaming industry tracker NPD Group.

Disney unveiled plans earlier this month for a new franchise combining a toy line and a game called "Disney Infinity," similar to "Skylanders" from Activision-Blizzard Inc. "Infinity" is being developed by Disney's Salt Lake City, Utah-based developer Avalanche Software and is set to debut in June alongside "Monsters University," the 3-D prequel to the 2001 Disney-Pixar film "Monsters Inc."

US durable goods orders rise 4.6 pct. on aircraft

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. demand for long-lasting manufactured goods rose sharply in December, helped by a strong gain in volatile aircraft orders. But companies slowed orders for computers and other goods that signal investment plans, indicating manufacturing could stay weak in 2013.

The Commerce Department said Monday that overall orders for durable goods increased 4.6 percent in December compared with November. The gains were led by a 56.4 percent increase in military aircraft orders and a 10.1 percent increase in commercial aircraft orders.

Orders for machinery, communications equipment and primary metals such as steel also showed increases.

Still, demand for core capital goods, a measure of business investment plans, rose just 0.2 percent. That followed two straight monthly gains of 3 percent.

Orders for durable goods, which are expected to last at least three years, can fluctuate from month to month. For all of 2012, durable goods orders rose 4.1 percent. But demand for core capital goods fell 0.3 percent for the year.

Slower growth in business orders has hurt manufacturing, which struggled to gain momentum in 2012. While orders for durable goods rebounded in the final months of last year, economists expect the overall trend to stay weak this year.

"The strength in durable goods orders for December is a most welcome development," said Dan Greenhaus, an analyst at BTIG. "Going forward though, despite the better numbers, we still expect business investment ... to slow yet again in 2013. This is a trend that remains in place given the weaker demand environment."

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the growth rate of business investment in equipment and software in the October-December quarter should come in close to 5 percent, an encouraging sign.

Ashworth, however, is worried about an increase in Social Security payroll taxes, which hit Americans in January and is expected to slow consumer spending at the start of the year. That could make businesses nervous and further slow economic growth.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 3.1 percent in the April-June quarter. The government will provide its first look at overall economic growth in the October-December quarter on Wednesday. Many analysts believe growth slowed in the final three months of last year to less than 2 percent.

The government releases its first estimate of economic growth for the fourth quarter on Wednesday.

Tamar Abrams: 'Big C:' Why Is Control Only Bad When Applied to Guns?

Recently on the evening news I was subjected to former Congressman Bob Barr saying, "It is all about the Big C -- Control." He could have been discussing his own record while in Congress, but he was actually talking about efforts to enact new gun control measures. Mr. Barr is a Board member of the NRA, so clearly he believes that government attempts to control Americans' love affair with firearms is wrong.

But it's curious that the Big C is negative mostly in relation to guns. Mr. Barr was a passionate and outspoken Congressional proponent of controlling who Americans can marry, which Americans are fit to adopt children in desperate need of homes and who should have access to abortions and birth control. In those instances, apparently the Big C was his guiding star.

What is it about politics in our country that makes it so easy for our leaders to decide which issues they will decide for us and which they should leave alone? It would appear that the Bob Barrs of this world see gay people and women as particularly unable to make wise decisions for themselves.

While in Congress, he voted to ban certain forms of family planning and abortion; he voted against allowing gay people in D.C. to adopt. The man who declared, "I am small government" clearly believes that women and gay people need the government to protect them from themselves, while gun owners need the government to step aside -- possibly while ducking for cover.

I have nothing against Mr. Barr, former Republican turned Libertarian. There are many other Mr. Barrs within our borders. But please don't fling the term Big C around when it threatens your precious guns and then stand under its banner when you apply it those who seek to make their own informed decisions in life.

We each struggle with decisions of morality and citizenship on a daily basis, and many of those decisions are really difficult. But the outcry against gun control the past weeks has merely highlighted the quiet storm that resulted from the more than 95 provisions passed by states in 2012 that restricted women's reproductive health and rights. A legal right to seek abortions is eroding daily. In my home state of Virginia, legislators enacted a law requiring women seeking abortions to first undergo a sonogram. Presumably, this is to ensure that women know what a fetus looks like. But apparently the NRA opposes a proposal expanding background checks on gun buyers because, what, we should just trust them? Like we trust women?

So to recap, apparently asking for stricter regulation for those seeking to stockpile arsenals of weapons in their homes is the bad kind of Big C. But treating women as too capricious to make their own decisions about their bodies is the good kind of Big C.

I've got to stop watching the evening news.

In search of business, Europe changes tone in Latin America

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Five years ago during the closing speeches of a summit in Chile, Spain's king told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to "shut up" in an exchange that epitomized the fruitless meetings between Europe and Latin America at the time.

Dominated by leftist rhetoric and instability in the Andes, the summits were sideshows to the rapid economic growth in Europe that followed the introduction of the euro a decade ago, and the concerns of Madrid and Brussels lay elsewhere.

But a debt crisis in Europe has turned the relationship between former imperial powers and their colonies on its head. EU leaders meeting in Santiago for a summit with Latin American heads of state this weekend were frank about their eagerness to piggy-back onto the region's impressive economic growth.

"This is now a strategic relationship between equal partners," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, leading a huge delegation of European Union leaders and business executives.

With so many bilateral meetings during the two-day summit, Merkel had barely finished delivering her remarks before she rushed off to Santiago's business district to try to arrange investments and seal trade deals.

"We invite you to invest in Germany," she said, echoing Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy, who the day before made his plea from Chile's presidential palace.

With 60 percent of young Spaniards unemployed, and the German economy, Europe's biggest, struggling with the impact of a public debt crisis that nearly broke up the euro zone last year, Latin America clearly has the upper hand.

Latin America's economic output is expected to grow almost 4 percent this year, while the 17-nation euro zone will probably contract. Europe wants Latin American companies to follow Mexican businessman Carlos Slim, who has invested in Dutch telecoms company KPN.

European governments also want to ensure their companies win big infrastructure contracts for ports, highways and airports in Latin America, including those for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

'NEVER BEEN BETTER'

Diplomats at the Santiago summit spoke of a new, relaxed mood among the more than 60 countries represented, helped by a big dose of humility from the Europeans.

"Latin America likes the idea that the European Union has problems too," said one EU diplomat who worked closely with Chilean colleagues during the summit.

Clearly anxious to get the message across, two of the European Union's most senior officials, Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso, gave five speeches each in less than two days, vaunting Latin America's successes and speaking of the "intertwined destinies" of the two regions.

That went down well with leaders such as Argentine President Cristina Fernandez, who praised Europe's change of tone: "The Europeans have finally realized ... we need a relationship where both sides win."

While the threat of a euro zone break-up was overcome last year, EU leaders in Santiago addressed questions about the future of the wider, 27-nation European Union after British Prime Minister David Cameron announced plans last week to hold a referendum on British membership if he wins re-election.

Meanwhile, summit host Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and his Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos appeared to revel in the turnaround in a continent once synonymous with hyperinflation, dictatorships and guerrilla violence.

"We've never been so well off," Santos said, trumpeting his pro-business drive that has experienced soaring foreign investment and a 30-month run of falling unemployment in Colombia. "Every one of our citizens coming out of poverty is a potential new consumer and a consumer for Europe."

Wall Street executives fret about talent drain

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - As the titans of Wall Street banks gathered to network, gossip and consider the future of their beleaguered industry in Davos over the past week, one common worry emerged: who is going to take over when we leave?

Some of the most ambitious minds in finance are leaving the industry after years of losses, scandals, bad press - and perhaps most importantly new regulations that have curbed some previously free-wheeling ways.

The issue, executives say, is not pay, but how much scope there is to innovate and build businesses, which is why more bankers and traders are leaving the big Wall Street firms for Silicon Valley, joining private investment partnerships like hedge funds and private equity funds, or going into energy and other industries.

David Boehmner, head of financial services in the Americas for the recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles, said he hears this message from Wall Street employees looking to leave the industry.

"I get people saying, 'I'm bored and I need to do something about it - this isn't a challenge anymore,'" he said.

The problem is particularly acute for big banks such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc or JPMorgan Chase & Co , several senior bank chief executives, managers and consultants told Reuters in interviews at the World Economic Forum here.

"There is a massive talent drain in our business," said a senior Wall Street executive, who declined to be identified.

BIGGEST CRITICS

For some of Wall Street's harshest critics this is likely to be perceived as good news. Former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker and other experts have argued for years that innovation has little place in the financial sector, and having more conservative bankers and fewer heavy risk takers running Wall Street will reduce the chances of another blow-up like the financial crisis. It will also help to increase wealth generation in more important parts of the economy, such as manufacturing and software, they argue.

The financial implosion in 2008 was partly triggered by the best and the brightest on Wall Street engineering products that helped inflate a massive housing bubble, and then magnified the losses that resulted. The financial sector globally received trillions of dollars of government support during the worst of the crisis, and new regulations are designed to ensure that bailouts are not necessary in the future.

But many of the biggest global banks have gotten only bigger, making them potentially even more dangerous to the financial system. And having talented executives who understand complicated financial products and know how to control risks will become even more important, executives say.

"It will become more of a problem five or 10 years down the road, but ultimately someone is going to have to manage these beasts," the Wall Street executive said.

It isn't difficult to find examples of the exodus from big banks.

After nearly 15 years in finance - with stints at American International Group Inc , Barclays Capital and PineBridge Investments - Jacques-Philippe Piverger left Wall Street in 2011 to launch a company called Micro Power Design Inc, which makes solar-powered lamps. Piverger's ultimate goal is to get the devices into the hands of poor people in developing countries whose access to electricity is limited.

"Isn't it cool?" he asked as one of the lamps was placed on the bar of the posh Belvedere Hotel in Davos.

Piverger was well-paid in finance but said his career had left him wanting. His startup gives him the ability to "address business and societal and environmental imperatives from under one roof," he said.

Another example is the Twitter-linked tech startup Dataminr, which is staffed by ex-employees from Wall Street firms, including Mark Dimont, who left Morgan Stanley last year to head a business development team there.

Of course, there have been previous waves of departures to hedge funds as bankers and traders have sought to strike out on their own - or to make more money - but this time the departures appear to be broader in nature.

TOLERATING ODDBALLS

The departure of employees may force Wall Street to consider a wider range of people for positions. Heidrick & Struggles' Boehmner gave a presentation to a group of young professionals in Davos about his biggest challenge recruiting for big banks these days: getting executives to think creatively when filling positions.

In the presentation - called "Hiring an oddball" - Boehmner described how hard it is to get bank executives to hire creative and "quirky" leaders who do not "fit in" with the prototypical suited-up Wall Street mold, but who could help revolutionize the industry.

Instead, those quirky types are sought by Silicon Valley, and they may be happier there. Many prefer the laid back atmosphere, not to mention the challenges of building a business, and the promise of lucrative rewards at companies like Google , Facebook and smaller startups, Boehmner said.

"Banks are not getting top-level talent out of universities anymore, so in 10 to 15 years, there could be a big problem when it comes to leadership at the senior level of these firms," Boehmner said. "They're seeing big gaps in talent."

Boehmner said he performed a search for a technology position at a major investment bank, calling on candidates from Silicon Valley who might be lured to New York with mega-paychecks. He was denied by everyone he approached, he said.

On the flip side, Heidrick & Struggles also did a search for a mobile-payments company on the West Coast that was looking for someone with financial expertise but offered just one-quarter of the pay. In that case, "we got tons of applicants," said Boehmner.

Jack Dunn, president and CEO of FTI Consulting, recalled a recent conversation with a friend's son who is about 35 years old and works at a major Wall Street bank.

Despite having a lucrative pay package and senior title, all the son talked about was finding an exit strategy, Dunn said.

"When I was young and didn't know any better, I would have thought it was a dream job," said Dunn, a former investment banker. "It's a problem because we're going to need someone to pick up the pieces, and a lot of the best people are leaving these firms."

What will Michelle Obama do with 4 more years?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Michelle Obama has a new look, both in person and online, and with the president's re-election, she has four more years as first lady, too.

That's got many people wondering: What will she do with them?

Take on a new cause? Travel more? Trace the path of another first lady and keep the Obama political brand alive by running for office?

The answers are to be determined.

The first lady is trying to figure out what comes next for this self-described "mom in chief" who also is a champion of healthier eating, an advocate for military families, a fitness buff and the best-selling author of a book about her White House garden.

For certain, she'll press ahead with her well-publicized efforts to reduce childhood obesity and rally the country around its service members.

"But beyond that, the first lady is exploring ways that she can make a real difference for Americans, not just for these next four years, but for years to come," said Kristina Schake, Mrs. Obama's communications director.

Here are five areas to watch.

___

NEW ISSUES

Will she take on a new cause? It's possible.

When Parade magazine asked last year whether she'd take up any new issues, Mrs. Obama identified women's health issues. "How do we strengthen families and make them healthier, an issue not just in America but around the world," she said.

Her marquee causes ? the "Let's Move" campaign against childhood obesity and the "Joining Forces" effort to help military families ? took a back seat last fall as she campaigned doggedly for President Barack Obama's re-election.

Look for her to begin publicizing those efforts anew.

Do not expect to see Mrs. Obama push more contentious issues such as gun control or immigration, both second-term priorities for the president. Her public approval rating was 73 percent in a December poll by CNN and she'd like to keep it there.

Some feminists remain unhappy that the Ivy League-educated lawyer hasn't used her position to champion what they view as more substantive issues.

Robert Watson, an American studies professor at Lynn University, said he hopes Mrs. Obama will use her popularity to pivot away from the "velvet-glove" issues first ladies typically embrace and say, "I'm swinging for the fence."

___

MALIA AND SASHA

Obama's daughters are older and will be in full teenage mode by the summer of 2014. Malia is already there at 14; sister Sasha is 11.

Both the president and first lady sometimes talk about the girls' busy lives and how they don't want to spend much time with their parents anymore.

Could having older, more independent children free Mrs. Obama to pursue other interests? Some first lady watchers say that's unlikely. After all, the teenage years are often full of angst about dating, proms, learning how to drive, going to college and so on.

"Michelle has made such a public statement about being the 'mom in chief' that it's hard to see her saying, 'Go ahead girls, here's the limo,'" Watson said.

Malia will graduate from high school during Obama's final year in office, in 2016, and probably trade White House for a college dorm. She and her parents will have to navigate the college application process and campus tours. Sasha will be in high school.

___

TRAVEL

Presidents and first ladies often step up the pace of international travel in the second term. But it seems unlikely that Obama could make such a pivot just yet, with the U.S. public still so concerned about the economy, unemployment and government spending.

One option would be to send Mrs. Obama abroad in his place.

The first lady is popular overseas and has been well-received outside the U.S., including in India, where she accompanied the president in 2010, and in Mexico, also in 2010, and in South Africa and Botswana in 2011, the only countries she has visited alone as first lady.

She and Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill, traveled together to Haiti after the massive earthquake there in January 2010.

Mrs. Obama also went to Spain in the summer of 2010 on a personal trip with friends and daughter Sasha, but her stay at a luxury resort on the Costa del Sol wasn't well-received back home, raising questions about the cost and wisdom of taking such a trip during tough economic times.

Laura Bush pursued a grueling foreign travel schedule during George W. Bush's second term. She visited 77 countries in eight years as first lady, including with the president, but 67 of those trips came during the second term, including solo stops in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, according to Anita McBride, her then-chief of staff who runs American University's first ladies program.

Hillary Rodham Clinton also traveled abroad extensively during Bill Clinton's second term.

___

RUN FOR PUBLIC OFFICE

Will she or won't she? Despite Mrs. Obama's many denials of interest in seeking elected herself, the question keeps getting asked. A recent survey found her to be more popular than Mark Kirk, the Republican senator from her home state of Illinois, in a hypothetical matchup.

"I have no interest in politics. Never have, never will," the first lady said last year on ABC's "The View."

But even those who at one time say "never" can later change their minds.

Hillary Clinton gave the same answer in 1995 when asked if she'd ever run for public office, says Myra Gutin, who studies first ladies at Rider University. But five years later, as her husband's presidency was ending, there was Clinton campaigning across New York for a Senate seat.

She won, used her time in the Senate as a springboard for her 2008 presidential campaign but lost the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama. She became his secretary of state but is departing soon amid feverish speculation that she will run for president in 2016.

Mrs. Obama will be young ? 53 years old ? when her husband leaves office in January 2017, and will have a range of options ahead of her. Friends say she has always believed there are ways to serve the country without running for office.

___

PERSONAL STYLE

Look for the first lady to continue to be a fashion trendsetter. Everything from her hair to her clothes is scrutinized, with some clothing pieces selling out quickly after she's seen wearing them.

Her new bangs became the talk of this town immediately after she went public with them on her 49th birthday, a few days before the president began his second term. Even the president said his wife's haircut was "the most significant event" of inaugural weekend and he gave his approval.

Mrs. Obama also won largely positive reviews for her inaugural wardrobe: Reed Krakoff and Thom Browne by day, and Michael Kors and Jason Wu by night. Wu designed her red chiffon and velvet ball gown. He also designed the white ball gown she wore four years ago.

She also has a new presence on Twitter ? (at)FLOTUS.

Court ruling on Obama's appointments a victory: Corker

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Republican U.S. senator on Sunday said a federal appeals court ruling against President Barack Obama's recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board could invalidate rulings made by the agency.

A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that Obama violated the U.S. Constitution when he used recess appointments in January 2012 and installed three nominees to the NLRB.

Senator Robert Corker said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday" that the ruling indicated the administration had overreached, characterizing the appointments as abusive.

"It was a huge victory for anybody who believes in balance of power and the Constitution," Corker said. "This ruling is very far-reaching and actually knocks down decades of action by presidents, as far as common practice goes."

The labor board nominees were facing stiff Republican opposition and Obama side-stepped Senate confirmations hearings by installing them with recess appointments. Republicans said he had undercut the Senate's power to confirm nominees because although most of its members were out of town, the chamber had not formally adjourned.

Friday's ruling also could limit presidential power to push through federal nominees and may be used to undo more decisions by the NLRB, and regulations by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The consumer agency's director, Richard Cordray, was named at the same time as the board members.

Corker was asked if the ruling invalidates more than 300 rulings made by the NLRB in the past year and those regulations established under Cordray at the CFPB and said it "could well do it."

"In each case, someone might have to challenge the rulings to make them invalid," he said.

The White House has said the court decision will not impact Cordray.

The No. 2 Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin, defended the White House's use of recess appointments due to fierce Republican resistance.

"In its frustration, this administration said, we were elected to govern," Durbin said "Fox News Sunday." "Whether it's a National Labor Relations Board or whatever, they wanted to put people in place to govern."

Family left devastated after pet cat is killed by poison - This is ...

ANIMAL lover Tracey Heap has been left distraught after her two cats were poisoned with antifreeze within days of each other.

The 46-year-old was devastated when 16-month-old tabby Beauty had to be put to sleep after consuming a lethal dose of the liquid.

  1. Tracey Heap's daughter Grace Hansbury aged six holding seven month old Charlie_

And her other cat Charlie is also being treated by vets after displaying the same symptoms.

Now Staffordshire Police are investigating whether both cats could have been deliberately targeted.

Tracey, from Smallthorne, said: "Poor Beauty just kept being sick.

"I thought it was just a bug, but then one day I came home and she was making this horrendous noise and she started fitting violently.

"She had lock jaw and it didn't stop, even when we got her to the vets."

Tracey rushed the cat to the PDSA, in Stoke, where staff took the decision to put Beauty down after finding she had dangerous levels of anti-freeze in her system.

Tracey, who lives in William Ruston Road with her six-year-old daughter Grace, added: "She had a vile death. No animal should ever have to go through what she did.

"Grace saw it all and she was so upset which makes it even more distressing.

"She hasn't stopped crying since it happened. We're all devastated." Shortly after Beauty was put to sleep earlier this month, six-month-old Charlie, who is Beauty's kitten, has also had to be treated by vets for permanent kidney damage after they found that he too had been exposed to the poison.

Tracey added: "He is okay at the moment.

"He hasn't had such extreme symptoms as Beauty had, but he could take a turn for the worse at any time. That's our fear.

"He is on prescription food now and I am petrified of letting him out in case it happens again.

"But cats need to be outdoors and it is unfair on him. I don't know how long I can keep it up.

"I know there's more anti-freeze about at the moment because of the cold weather but we think they have both been deliberately targeted.

"I just want other people to be aware that this is happening."

The RSPCA is now warning pet owners to be vigilant following the poisonings.

A spokesman for the animal charity said: "Most people are unaware of the hidden dangers to pets from antifreeze poisoning. Unfortunately, many animals find the taste of antifreeze very attractive, and ingesting even the smallest amount can lead to kidney failure and death, especially in cats.

"We are deeply concerned and extremely saddened by the recent spates of antifreeze poisonings in cats across the country.

"We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that antifreeze poisoning can cause animals pain, suffering and distress, ultimately resulting in their death."

The spokesman added: "The poisoning of a cat can constitute a criminal offence.

"Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the maximum penalty for anyone found guilty of this offence is up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of around ?20,000."

Staffordshire Police confirmed officers were investigating the poisonings.

A spokesman said: "We are aware of the matter and are liaising with the RSPCA."

Silver News: Will Silver Outperform Gold and Platinum in 2013 ...

Listen to veteran precious metals advisor Tom Cloud as he explains what lies ahead for gold, silver, palladium, and platinum prices. In silver news, Tom explains why he believes silver will outperform the other metals in 2013.

    Gold News: German Repatriation
? Germany allegedly holds 11% of the world?s gold supply. The U.S. is #1 with 26%.
? Germany is now demanding much of its gold held at the Federal Reserve to be returned to Frankfurt.
? The Federal Reserve reacted by saying it would return Germany?s gold within 7 years.
? Why would it take so long to return the gold to Germany unless the Federal Reserve doesn?t have all the gold?
? Netherlands now thinking about asking for its gold back from the Federal Reserve as well.
? What does this mean for gold investors? It?s good for the price of gold ? More pressure on the physical gold market.

    Silver News
? U.S. Mint cut off the sale of Silver Eagle Coins after only 2 1/2 weeks into 2013.
? U.S. Mint will not resume sales until next week; plus, the premium charged by the U.S. Mint on these coins is now higher at $0.50/oz
? Canadian Maple Leaf also has an increased premium at $0.25/oz
? The good deals in silver right now are the Silver Buffalo and the Silver Morgan 1-ounce silver bars.
? Many forecasters believe silver will outperform the other metals in 2013.

    Palladium News
? The price is now in the $720s to $730s. If you were patient throughout the past several months, you are now seeing a nice rise in your palladium holdings.
? With many countries continuing quantitative easing (money printing) in 2013, and with no worldwide recession, I believe palladium should easily reach in the $800s in the next couple of months

    Platinum News
? Platinum ended the year 2012 as the best performing metal, but this year (2013) many forecasters are expecting platinum to be second behind silver

    Markets
? Debt ceiling increase should have a positive impact on the metals markets.
? The U.S. borrows $4.2 billion per day more than it takes in revenue. The deficit is going up continually. All this is great for the price of gold.
? Japan is also moving toward quantitative easing with its new leadership, which is also great for the metals.

New mutations discovered driving malignant melanoma

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Two new mutations that collectively occur in 71 percent of malignant melanoma tumors have been discovered in what scientists call the "dark matter" of the cancer genome, where cancer-related mutations haven't been previously found.

Reporting their findings in the Jan. 24 issue of Science Express, the researchers from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute said the highly "recurrent" mutations -- occurring in the tumors of many people -- may be the most common mutations in melanoma cells found to date.

The researchers said these cancer-associated mutations are the first to be discovered in the vast regions of DNA in cancer cells that do not contain genetic instructions for making proteins. The mutations are located in non-protein-coding DNA that regulates the activity of genes.

This non-coding DNA, much of which was previously dismissed as "junk," accounts for 99 percent of a cell's genome. A large number of oncogenic mutations in cancer have been identified in the past several decades, but all have been found within the actual genetic blueprints for proteins.

"This new finding represents an initial foray into the 'dark matter' of the cancer genome," said Levi Garraway, MD, PhD, of Dana-Farber and the Broad and the article's senior author.

"In addition, this represents the discovery of two of the most prevalent melanoma gene mutations. Considered as a whole, these two TERT promoter mutations are even more common than BRAF mutations in melanoma. Altogether, this discovery could cause us to think more creatively about the possible benefits of targeting TERT in cancer treatment or prevention."

The mutations affect a promoter region -- a stretch of DNA code that regulates the expression of a gene -- adjacent to the TERT gene. TERT contains the recipe for making telomerase reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that can make cells virtually immortal, and is often found overexpressed in cancer cells. A promoter region of DNA controls the rate of a gene's transcription -- the copying of its DNA recipe into a message used by the cell to manufacture a protein.

"We think these mutations in the promoter region are potentially one way the TERT gene can be activated," said Franklin Huang, MD, PhD, co-first author of the report along with Harvard MD-PhD student Eran Hodis, of Dana-Farber and the Broad Institute.

To investigate the mutation's effect, the researchers hooked the mutant TERT promoter to a gene that makes luciferase -- a light-emitting protein. They observed that the mutant promoter increased the production of luciferase in laboratory cell lines. In the same way, the scientists presume, the mutant promoter in human pigmented skin cells can send the TERT gene into overdrive, potentially contributing to the development of melanoma.

The mutations were discovered when the scientists sifted through data from whole-genome sequencing of malignant melanoma tumors. Unlike "whole-exome" searches that examine only the protein-coding DNA of a cell's genome, whole-genome searches scan all of the DNA, including the non-coding regions.

In analyzing whole-genome data, the investigators discovered the two somatic, or not-inherited, mutations in 17 of 19 (89 percent) of the tumors. Next, they sequenced a larger number of melanoma tumors and found that the two mutations were present in 71 percent of tumors in total.

The researchers said the same mutations are present in cell lines from some other malignancies, and that preliminary evidence showed they might be unusually common in bladder and liver cancers. They also noted that the discovery of these important mutations in DNA previously not linked to cancer-causing alterations highlights the value of whole-genome searches of tumor DNA.

Other authors include Mary Jue Xu, a student at Harvard Medical School; Gregory V. Kryukov, PhD, of the Broad; and Lynda Chin, MD, of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The research was supported in part by the National Institutes of Health (T32 CA009172, T32GM07753, DP2OD002750, and R33CA126674), the Mittelman Family Fellowship, the American Cancer Society, the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, the Melanoma Research Alliance, and the Starr Cancer Consortium.

New Synthetic Polymer Is First to Match Rigidity of DNA or Collagen

The stiff supergel mimics cell scaffolding such that a cold solution of it poured on to a wound could quickly form a gel barrier when it warmed to body temperature

synthetic polymer When warmed, a new synthetic polymer forms a network, seen here under an atomic force microscope. The gaps are about one-tenth of a micrometer. Image: A. Rowan et al / Radboud University of Nijmegen

Take one kilogram of polyisocyanide polymer. Sprinkle liberally across an Olympic swimming pool. Warm gently. Within minutes, your jelly is ready. Serves 25 million.

Alan Rowan, a materials chemist at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, is describing the properties of a remarkable polymer developed in his lab and unveiled today in Nature. He has not actually run the swimming-pool experiment, but he sounds as if he would love to give it a try. When it comes to forming gels, he says excitedly, his polymer is ?probably the best in the world ? an order of magnitude better than anything else?.

But it offers much more than record-breaking dessert portions: it is the first synthetic polymer that can match the rigidity found in many biological polymers, says Margaret Gardel, a biophysicist at the University of Chicago, Illinois, who wrote a News and Views article to accompany the publication. ?Nearly all biopolymers, like DNA or collagen, have some inherent rigidity,? she explains; synthetic polymers, by contrast, tend to be extremely floppy.

Rowan?s polymer strands have a helical backbone with thousands of short peptides jutting out from the sides, each carrying long tails made of repeating carbon and oxygen chains. Nitrogen and hydrogen atoms in neighboring peptides bond to each other to give the backbone rigidity, and the carbon and oxygen tails readily grab water molecules, making the polymer extremely soluble.

helical backbone
The polymer has a helical backbone (red) and tails (blue) that link to neighbouring strands.
Image: Kouwer, P. H. J. et al. Nature

Strong structure
Once the polymer is dissolved, warming it causes the tails to squeeze water molecules away and form links with neighboring polymer strands. Above a certain temperature, the solution transforms into a gel in seconds as the strands self-assemble into bundles roughly 10 nanometers wide. As with the biopolymers in a living cell, or the fibers in a rope, the bundling stiffens the whole structure. ?The nanoscale mechanism is the same as at the macroscale,? says Rowan.

Researchers already knew that bundling was important in strengthening biopolymers. But Rowan?s team has measured the stiffness of individual strands and of the bundles, and has shown the relationship between the two. ?Now that we understand the principles, we can start making gels at even lower concentrations,? predicts Rowan.

The polymer?s ability to form a gel on heating is relatively unusual: the opposite is true for most gels. A gelatin solution, for example, must be cooled to form jelly. Rowan imagines that a cold solution of his polymer poured on to a wound to protect the tissue would quickly form a gel barrier when it warmed to body temperature; applying an ice pack could liquefy it when it was no longer needed. The researchers are now running tests on this concept, ?using a leg of pork that we put in the oven at 40 ?C?, says Rowan.

Scientists discover how epigenetic information could be inherited: Mechanism of epigenetic reprogramming revealed

Jan. 24, 2013 ? New research reveals a potential way for how parents' experiences could be passed to their offspring's genes. The research was published January, 25 in the journal Science.

Epigenetics is a system that turns our genes on and off. The process works by chemical tags, known as epigenetic marks, attaching to DNA and telling a cell to either use or ignore a particular gene.

The most common epigenetic mark is a methyl group. When these groups fasten to DNA through a process called methylation they block the attachment of proteins which normally turn the genes on. As a result, the gene is turned off.

Scientists have witnessed epigenetic inheritance, the observation that offspring may inherit altered traits due to their parents' past experiences. For example, historical incidents of famine have resulted in health effects on the children and grandchildren of individuals who had restricted diets, possibly because of inheritance of altered epigenetic marks caused by a restricted diet.

However, it is thought that between each generation the epigenetic marks are erased in cells called primordial gene cells (PGC), the precursors to sperm and eggs. This 'reprogramming' allows all genes to be read afresh for each new person -- leaving scientists to question how epigenetic inheritance could occur.

The new Cambridge study initially discovered how the DNA methylation marks are erased in PGCs, a question that has been under intense investigation over the past 10 years. The methylation marks are converted to hydroxymethylation which is then progressively diluted out as the cells divide. This process turns out to be remarkably efficient and seems to reset the genes for each new generation. Understanding the mechanism of epigenetic resetting could be exploited to deal with adult diseases linked with an accumulation of aberrant epigenetic marks, such as cancers, or in 'rejuvenating' aged cells.

However, the researchers, who were funded by the Wellcome Trust, also found that some rare methylation can 'escape' the reprogramming process and can thus be passed on to offspring -- revealing how epigenetic inheritance could occur. This is important because aberrant methylation could accumulate at genes during a lifetime in response to environmental factors, such as chemical exposure or nutrition, and can cause abnormal use of genes, leading to disease. If these marks are then inherited by offspring, their genes could also be affected.

Dr Jamie Hackett from the University of Cambridge, who led the research, said: "Our research demonstrates how genes could retain some memory of their past experiences, revealing that one of the big barriers to the theory of epigenetic inheritance -- that epigenetic information is erased between generations -- should be reassessed."

"It seems that while the precursors to sperm and eggs are very effective in erasing most methylation marks, they are fallible and at a low frequency may allow some epigenetic information to be transmitted to subsequent generations. The inheritance of differential epigenetic information could potentially contribute to altered traits or disease susceptibility in offspring and future descendants."

"However, it is not yet clear what consequences, if any, epigenetic inheritance might have in humans. Further studies should give us a clearer understanding of the extent to which heritable traits can be derived from epigenetic inheritance, and not just from genes. That could have profound consequences for future generations."

Professor Azim Surani from the University of Cambridge, principal investigator of the research, said: "The new study has the potential to be exploited in two distinct ways. First, the work could provide information on how to erase aberrant epigenetic marks that may underlie some diseases in adults. Second, the study provides opportunities to address whether germ cells can acquire new epigenetic marks through environmental or dietary influences on parents that may evade erasure and be transmitted to subsequent generations, with potentially undesirable consequences."
