Get fit! Here are 5 steps to get you motivated to move.

You know you should do it. And you know why: Exercising ? simply put, moving instead of sitting ? is critical for safeguarding your health and setting a good example for your kids. So why does it seem so hard to get yourself moving?

The truth is: You can. But knowing how and why to exercise isn?t enough. You need to develop the right mind-set to get and stay motivated.

?Change is hard!? says certified health behavior coach Shelly Hoefs, fitness supervisor at the Mutch Women?s Center for Health Enrichment in Sioux Falls, S.D. ?When we try to start exercising, we think of all the excuses for not doing it and all the things that have gotten in the way before. Getting fit starts to seem overwhelming. And that makes it feel stressful. Before long, we don?t want to do it anymore.?

Here are five steps to get you moving in the right direction ? and keep you going.

1. Find Personal Motivation to Exercise

What you need to get you up off the couch is a reason that?s important to you. At first, that may be some external factor, says Cal Hanson, director of the Sanford Wellness Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. It could be a number on the scale that surprises you or your doctor?s recommendation that you need to move more to stay healthy.

There are all kinds of benefits to getting fit. Which matters most to you? Something as simple as taking a walk after dinner every night helps to:

- control your weight
- strengthen your bones
- enhance your muscles
- reduce your risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer

Plus, by becoming active, you?re being a good role model for your children.

These benefits may get you started, but they may not cut it when it comes to keeping you moving day after day, Hanson says. To keep up your motivation to exercise over time, you also need to find your internal motivators. Maybe taking a yoga class leaves you feeling more energized or less stressed. Maybe a run or walk every day helps you let go of stress. Hanson says these are the kind of rewards that are meaningful to you on a personal level and that can help keep you motivated.

Health News - Link between creativity and mental illness confirmed

People in creative professions are treated more often for mental illness than the general population, there being a particularly salient connection between writing and schizophrenia.

This according to researchers at Karolinska Institutet, whose large-scale Swedish registry study is the most comprehensive ever in its field.

Last year, the team showed that artists and scientists were more common amongst families where bipolar disorder and schizophrenia is present, compared to the population at large. They subsequently expanded their study to many more psychiatric diagnoses - such as schizoaffective disorder, depression, anxiety syndrome, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, autism, ADHD, anorexia nervosa and suicide - and to include people in outpatient care rather than exclusively hospital patients.

The present study tracked almost 1.2 million patients and their relatives, identified down to second-cousin level. Since all were matched with healthy controls, the study incorporated much of the Swedish population from the most recent decades. All data was anonymized and cannot be linked to any individuals.

The results confirmed those of their previous study: certain mental illness - bipolar disorder - is more prevalent in the entire group of people with artistic or scientific professions, such as dancers, researchers, photographers and authors. Authors specifically also were more common among most of the other psychiatric diseases (including schizophrenia, depression, anxiety syndrome and substance abuse) and were almost 50 per cent more likely to commit suicide than the general population.

The researchers also observed that creative professions were more common in the relatives of patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anorexia nervosa and, to some extent, autism. According to Simon Kyaga, consultant in psychiatry and doctoral student at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the results give cause to reconsider approaches to mental illness.

"If one takes the view that certain phenomena associated with the patients illness are beneficial, it opens the way for a new approach to treatment," he says. "In that case, the doctor and patient must come to an agreement on what is to be treated, and at what cost. In psychiatry and medicine generally there has been a tradition to see the disease in black-and-white terms and to endeavour to treat the patient by removing everything regarded as morbid."

The study was financed with grants from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Psychiatry Foundation, the Bror Gadelius Foundation, the Stockholm Centre for Psychiatric Research and the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research.

Skydiver safely jumps from stratosphere over New Mexico

ROSWELL, New Mexico (Reuters) - An Austrian daredevil leapt into the stratosphere from a balloon near the edge of space 24 miles above Earth on Sunday and safely landed, setting a record for the highest skydive and breaking the sound barrier in the process.

Cheers broke out as Felix Baumgartner, 43, jumped from a skateboard-sized shelf outside the 11-by-8-foot (3.3-by-2.4 meter) fiberglass and acrylic capsule that was carried higher than 128,000 feet by an enormous balloon.

"We love you Felix!" screamed the crowd gathered in a mission control setting at his launch site in Roswell, New Mexico as more than 8 million people watched his feat online.

Baumgartner's body pierced the atmosphere at 833.9 miles per hour, according to preliminary numbers released by Brian Utley, the certification official for the Federation Aeronautic International, at a press conference afterward.

Baumgartner's speed clinched one of his goals: to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier, typically measured at more than 690 mph. And he did so on the 65th anniversary of legendary American pilot Chuck Yeager's flight shattering the sound barrier on October 14, 1947.

Utley said preliminary figures indicate Baumgartner broke a total of three established world records, including the highest altitude skydive, longest freefall without a parachute and fastest fall achieved during a skydive.

Baumgartner landed safely on the ground and raised his arms in a victory salute just 10 minutes after he stepped into the air. Soon he was hugged by his mother and father, who took their first trip outside Europe to see his historic plunge, and his girlfriend jumped up and wrapped her legs around him.

"It was way harder than I expected," Baumgartner said. Recalling his final words before he stepped into the stratosphere, he said, "Sometimes you have to get up really high to know how small you are."

The Austrian has made a career of risky jumps including skydiving across the English Channel and parachuting off the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.

PREPARATION

Earlier Baumgartner prepared to jump from the pressurized capsule by going through a checklist of 40 items with project adviser Joe Kittinger, holder of a 19-mile high altitude parachute jump record that Baumgartner smashed.

Earlier in the flight, he expressed concern that his astronaut-like helmet was not heating properly.

"This is very serious, Joe," said Baumgartner as the capsule, designed to remain at 55 degrees Fahrenheit ascended in skies where temperatures were expected to plunge below -91.8 F (-67.8 C), according to the project's website. "Sometimes it's getting foggy when I exhale. ... I do not feel heat."

Baumgartner's ascent into the stratosphere took about 2-1/2 hours.

The 30 million-cubic-foot (850,000-cubic-metre) plastic balloon, is about one-tenth the thickness of a plastic bag, or roughly as thin as a dry cleaner bag.

University Announces PPP Task Force Members

Members of the University?s Program Prioritization Process (PPP) Task Force have been appointed by president Alastair Summerlee.

The University community had been asked to nominate faculty and staff members to fill 10 positions ? five faculty, five staff ? on the task force. Students had been asked to apply for two internship positions ? one undergraduate and one graduate ? with full voting and membership rights and responsibilities.

The Senate Bylaws Committee reviewed all nominees for representative composition and task force charter and membership attributes before sharing a list of candidates with the president. Summerlee accepted the recommended slate without change.

Members are:

Faculty: Profs. Wayne Caldwell, Ontario Agricultural College (OAC); Darren Wood, Ontario Veterinary College (OVC); Jonathan Newman, OAC and College of Arts (COA); Bill Van Heyst, College of Physical and Engineering Science (CPES); and Steven Newmaster, College of Biological Science (CBS).

Staff: Cara Wehkamp, Student Life; Heidi Huisman, College of Management and Economics (and formerly Audit Services); Steve Seifried, CPES; Michelle Fach, Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support; and Dan MacLachlan, Physical Resources.

Students will be represented by undergraduate Noorain Shethwala, criminal justice and public policy, and OAC graduate student Anne Laarman.

The task force includes six current and two past chairs of Senate standing committees, as follows: Profs. Coral Murrant, Planning and Priorities; Ian Newby-Clark, Quality Assurance; Scott McEwan, Graduate Studies; Alison Duncan, Non Degree Studies; Catherine Carstairs, Bylaws; Ann Wilson, Research Board; Paul Salmon, past chair of Non Degree Studies , and Al Sullivan, past chair of Planning and Priorities.

Sullivan will serve as task force chair and Fach, vice-chair.

As a key part of the PPP, the task force will assess all academic and non-academic programs and services under a University-wide initiative to identify and focus on U of G?s strengths.

Its 21 members will review and rank program information submitted by units and then share program rankings in a report.

Maureen Mancuso, provost and vice-president (academic), will lead the prioritization effort and serve as its spokesperson.

Yet on Monday, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court will consider whether what some have called Ms. Wright?s lengthy ?list of shame? is a punishment too Puritanical even for New England, where the fallout may include schoolyard teasing and public shaming to add to the powerful intrigues of southern Maine towns and villages.

?We think there's a really important principle at stake here: These people are presumed innocent,? defense attorney Stephen Schwartz said. ?Once these names are released, they're all going to have the mark of a scarlet letter, if you will.?

In his fictional expos? of the Puritans who helped found New England, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote in ?The Scarlet Letter? that ?there can be no outrage, methinks, against our common nature ? whatever be the delinquencies of the individual ? no outrage more flagrant than to forbid the culprit to hide his face for shame.?

The Puritanical code shamed vices in order to improve the common lot and aid common survival, and that unerring view continues to permeate not only New England, but an entire nation that remains, critics say, both egregious in its excesses and churlish in its judgments.

In recent years, some US judges have returned to the ?scarlet letter? idea by forcing convicts to publicly display what crimes they?ve committed. The US public, skeptical about the rehabilitative effects of prison, has largely applauded such sentences, according to the New York Law School?s Justice Action Center.

The Zumba Madam case is, of course, different. The names are to be released as a matter of legal course.? Soliciting a prostitute is a misdemeanor in Maine, meaning that those found guilty will face fines but no jail time. But the punishment of being publicly outed could be far worse for the politicians, policemen, farmers, accountants, and even a TV personality who are believed to be included on Ms. Wright?s client list.

?There's still some of that puritanical New England left around," Will Bradford, who owns a copy shop in town, told the Associated Press. "There are places in the world that would laugh at this."

Meantime, however, a counter-Puritan argument has emerged suggesting a more modern idea that the names should be sealed since it?s likely that innocent people will also be victimized by the release of the names.

Spectrum sharing opens a potential attack route ? Tech News and ...

One aspect of spectrum sharing that?s receiving less attention than it should is security ? specifically, potential problems brought on by the very attributes that makes this technology work.

There?s a basic concept in computer network security: If you don?t want A to attack B, make it impossible for A and B to communicate. That?s why sensitive military communications systems do not have links to the internet. Experts realize that, even with the best firewalls and filtering, if a connection exists, the system is inherently less secure.

That?s exactly the security problem that arises with spectrum sharing: It creates connections that could be compromised.

In current dedicated (non-sharing) spectrum-allocation approaches, devices operating in spectrum band ?A? cannot interfere with systems using band ?B.? Sure, sometimes there?s a little interference due to poor radio design ? for example, the proposed LightSquared network and existing GPS devices ? but the attack path does not exist. Even if a smartphone were infected with the worst virus imaginable, the malware could not interrupt communications provided over different spectrum bands.

Sharing spectrum could mean sharing viruses too.

That could change with spectrum sharing, where devices labeled as ?secondary users? share spectrum belonging to ?primary users.? Sharing happens either in specific geographic locations where the primary is not operating on the spectrum in question, or during specific periods of time when the primary system is not using the spectrum.

In what is called ?dynamic spectrum access,? the primary system posts to a database the availability of its spectrum. Then, the secondary user queries the database to learn when and where it can use that available spectrum. Alternatively, the secondary system may use cognitive radios to sense the spectrum environment and determine whether the secondary system can use the spectrum without interfering with the primary user. Combining databases and cognitive radios is another possible approach to enable spectrum sharing.

One area of particular concern, however, is that, in many cases, primary users will be sensitive government systems, especially if up to 1 GHz of spectrum is set aside for sharing, as proposed by the President?s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST.) What happens if the secondary user device doesn?t follow the rules and transmits at times or in locations it?s not supposed to? Worse yet, what if hundreds of thousands of devices are systematically compromised and start misbehaving in unison to launch a coordinated denial-of-service attack on the government communications systems?

It?s hard to know for sure the possible ramifications of such a barrage, because our industry currently has little information about the primary government systems with which commercial operations would share spectrum; much of that data is classified. But the effects can?t be good.

The whole point of spectrum sharing is for secondary users not to use the spectrum when the primary system needs it. Doing so could result in denial-of-service for the primary government system, with potential consequences that include lower reliability, operation over reduced distances, or even complete failure.

The airwaves aren?t the only problem.

Could this device harbor malware that might hop the airwaves?

Compounding my concern is how complex user devices are becoming. In the same way that personal computers became more vulnerable to malware as they grew increasingly sophisticated, so are smartphones now becoming targets. The number of ways in which malware can infect mobile devices will only increase, and if that malware is designed to disrupt the proper operation of the smartphone radio, then a spectrum attack on government communications systems via a shared-spectrum scenario is a real possibility.

That?s true even though the spectrum-sharing logic may, theoretically, be isolated from the application-execution space in the smartphone. As long as both are present and some form of connection exists, the consumer?s mobile device could become an attack path in spectrum sharing situations.

It gets worse.

So far we?ve only considered user devices being compromised. But what if an attacker infiltrated the database itself in a dynamic-spectrum access system? It?s that database that determines how secondary systems access the band, and if the database is manipulated into giving out incorrect information, the secondary system could massively disrupt the primary system. And this could occur on a network-wide basis.

Don?t panic, just pause.

We can share. Security just needs to be thought out first.

It?s not that appropriate safeguards can?t be implemented. Most security problems can be solved, given sufficient time and effort. A more difficult and pertinent question is whether protective measures can be designed beforehand and sufficiently well to satisfy security officers responsible for extremely sensitive primary government systems. In my view, hardening spectrum-sharing systems to protect against malicious attack will inevitably add to the already considerable complexity of such systems.

As I?ve stated previously, spectrum sharing can theoretically be made to work. Sharing scenarios can also be made secure. However, ensuring that a networking system is secure is a time-consuming process, regardless of the type of network.

It is impossible to predict just how much overhead thinking through security issues will add to developing spectrum-sharing solutions. Rather, security has to be added as yet one more consideration, along with all the other concerns raised by spectrum sharing. These include identifying what types of systems will be shared and how, determining the market for shared systems, and developing specifications and standards to allow sharing.

Beyond very basic-use cases, spectrum sharing is going to be a complicated proposition. Ensuring that sharing is secure and does not endanger existing government systems only adds to the complexity. Therefore, I don?t see sharing as a short-term solution to our spectrum woes.

Felix Baumgartner successfully lands after highest freefall from edge of space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? Austria's Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday (Oct. 14, 2012) after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission. Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,342.8 km/h (Mach 1.24) jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.

After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed Sunday morning a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

Baumgartner landed safely with his parachute in the desert of New Mexico after jumping out of his space capsule at 39,045 meters and plunging back towards earth, hitting a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. Countless millions of people around the world watched his ascent and jump live on television broadcasts and live stream on the Internet. At one point during his freefall Baumgartner appeared to spin rapidly, but he quickly re-gained control and moments later opened his parachute as members of the ground crew cheered and viewers around the world heaved a sigh of relief.

"It was an incredible up and down today, just like it's been with the whole project," a relieved Baumgartner said. "First we got off with a beautiful launch and then we had a bit of drama with a power supply issue to my visor. The exit was perfect but then I started spinning slowly. I thought I'd just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I'd lose consciousness. I didn't feel a sonic boom because I was so busy just trying to stabilize myself. We'll have to wait and see if we really broke the sound barrier. It was really a lot harder than I thought it was going to be."

Baumgartner and his team spent five years training and preparing for the mission that is designed to improve our scientific understanding of how the body copes with the extreme conditions at the edge of space.

Baumgartner had endured several weather-related delays before finally lifting off under bright blue skies and calm winds on Sunday morning. The Red Bull Stratos crew watching from Mission Control broke out into spontaneous applause when the balloon lifted off.

French towns launch debt strike over "toxic" Dexia loans

PARIS, France (Reuters) - French towns that say they were tricked into taking out risky loans from rescued lender Dexia are refusing to repay them in full and are asking President Francois Hollande for a bailout.

Franco-Belgian municipal bank Dexia was propped up with billion of euros of public money last October, when it become the first banking victim of Europe's debt crisis after its strategy of using short-term borrowing scheme to finance long-term lending came unstuck.

Those loans included an estimated 13 billion euros of risky structured products that went sour after the 2008 financial crisis, saddling thousands of French towns with crippling interest rates.

Frustrated by what they perceive as government inaction over the mounting repayments, mayors in a handful of the towns are tearing up their contracts rather than pay the state-rescued bank with money raised from tax hikes or spending cuts.

"I was not elected to raise taxes and to have those taxes go directly into banks," said Xavier-Martin Le Chevalier, mayor of the northwestern coastal town of Tregastel. "Directly or indirectly, the state will end up having to pay the bill."

The payments strike is an unwelcome distraction for Hollande as he battles to bring France's public deficit back below European Union limits against a backdrop of economic slowdown and rising unemployment.

The French, Belgian and Luxembourg governments initially stumped up 45 billion euros of guarantees to cover Dexia's debts, a sum that was raised to 55 billion in June. On Saturday, the bank's chief executive warned it may need recapitalizing soon.

Dozens of municipalities have already sued Dexia for allegedly mis-selling them the "toxic" debt products, which were indexed to everything from foreign currencies to U.S. loans.

Le Chevalier said he had opted to continue paying his town's Dexia loan at the initial fixed interest rate - in his case, 3 percent - rather than the new variable Swiss franc-pegged rate, which at end-July stood at 13 percent.

He is not alone.

"We will repay the principal and the previous interest rate, nothing more," said Sebastien Pietrasanta, mayor of the Paris suburb of Asnieres which, having recently ploughed millions of euros into an urban facelift, faces a doubling of loan repayments to Dexia out of its 182 million-euro debt pile.

"Otherwise it means no more staff in schools and no more daycare centers."

SPOOKING THE STATE

In its handing of the rebellious mayors, the state has so far tended to toe the line of least resistance - understandable given the size of its own exposure to Dexia's government-guaranteed loan book.

Responding to the Asnieres case, junior minister Anne-Marie Escoffier said municipalities "must honor their debt repayments" unless there has been a breach of the rules.

"The amount of money at stake is no doubt spooking the state at a time of pressure on the public purse," said Christophe Faverjon, mayor of the central town of Unieux. "But are we going to let cities fail?...It is fair that the state should step in."

Some mayors believe the debtors' strike has yet to peak, given a recent ruling in the Paris Court of Appeal that upheld the central-eastern city of Saint-Etienne's refusal to reimburse interest-rate swaps bought from Royal Bank of Scotland pending a final resolution of the case.

But in the case of Unieux, the Lyon Court of Appeal ruled last month the town had broken contract law by unilaterally deciding not to repay in full.

Dexia said it had "acknowledged" the legal ruling against Unieux and the statement by Escoffier. The bank declined to comment further.

As they battle the higher interest rates, many municipalities have started raising taxes.

"Most of us (mayors) have been building up provisions... And this has already started to cost municipalities," said Maurice Vincent, mayor of Saint-Etienne.

"There has been a slight increase in taxation ... between 1 and 4 percentage points, depending on the case."

You don?t have to make a big show of it every day ? that?s not the point. It?s the smaller things that really add up and provide the backbone of a loving relationship.

Need some ideas? Here are ten.

Tell your partner you really enjoyed and appreciated the meal they made.

If your partner comes home tired, tell them that you love them and appreciate the hard work they do and insist that they spend an evening relaxing.

Pick a flower or two on your way home from work and put them in a glass vase on the table.

When you?re just sitting there near your partner, hold your partner?s hand for a while.

Tell your partner that you love him or her every day.

Suggest an evening activity that you know your partner loves, even if it?s not something you?re thrilled about.

Write a short ?I love you? note on a piece of paper and stick it in your partner?s wallet or purse.

Take care of a task that your partner usually handles and don?t mention it; if it comes up, just smile and give your partner a kiss.

If your partner needs to blow off steam, listen and don?t interrupt (unless you?re trying to understand), and don?t bury the complaints in unwanted advice.

Hug your partner as the first one of you leaves for work, and hug your partner when the last of you gets home from work.

These are such little steps. They take perhaps a moment and rarely cost anything. Most of the time, the biggest effort involved is simply thinking of them. Yet, when they?re done consistently, they become a big part of the foundation of a stable and long-lasting relationship, and a stable and long-lasting relationship improves.

DENVER (AP) ? Denver police say someone has fired a shot through the window of President Barack Obama's Denver campaign office.

Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez says people were inside the office when the shooting happened Friday afternoon, but no one was injured. A large panel of glass was left shattered at the office on West Ninth Avenue near Acoma Street.

Lopez says investigators are looking at surveillance video but have not yet confirmed a description of a vehicle that might be linked to the shooting. Police didn't immediately release other details while detectives pursue leads.

Lopez says she isn't aware of any previous threats against the campaign office.

The Secret Service referred questions about the incident to Denver police.

An Obama campaign spokeswoman declined to comment.

Satellite sees 16th Atlantic tropical depression born near Bahamas

The 16th tropical depression of the Atlantic Ocean season has formed northeast of the Bahamas and NOAA's GOES-14 satellite captured a visible image of the storm as it tracks to the southwest.

NOAA's GOES-14 satellite captured a visible image of newborn Tropical Depression 16 (TD16) near the Bahamas on Oct. 11 at 7:45 a.m. EDT. TD16 appeared as a rounded area of clouds just northeast of the Bahamas and its western fringes were just off the Florida east coast. GOES-14 also showed another low pressure area with the potential for development a few hundred miles from the Windward Islands. That low appeared less organized.

At 11 a.m. EDT on Oct. 11, the newest tropical depression had maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph). It was located near latitude 25.4 north and longitude 72.6 west, about 235 miles (380 km) east-northeast of the central Bahamas. Tropical Depression 16 is just drifting to the south near 1 mph (2 kph) and according to the National Hurricane Center, is expected to turn toward the southwest and move a little faster. On the forecast track the center of TD16 is expected to remain northeast of the central Bahamas until dissipation occurs tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 12.

While TD16 lives and dies, another low pressure area is trying to find life as a depression. System 98L is a broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave is located about 350 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that shower and thunderstorm activity picked up today, Oct.11, and it appears to be getting better organized on GOES-14 visible satellite imagery. Some of those showers and thunderstorms may have heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Those storms will be experienced by the residents of the Lesser Antilles over the next couple of days, as System 98L moves to the west-northwest near 15 mph. Rough seas can also be expected in the Lesser Antilles from System 98L.

System 98L is in an environment favorable for development, so the NHC gives it a 50 percent chance of becoming the17th tropical depression of the season in the next couple of days.

VP debate tees up closing issues for Romney, Obama

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? In a spirited debate that laid out stark choices, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan teed up pointed arguments on the economy, social policy and America's place in the world that President Barack Obama and GOP rival Mitt Romney now will drive forward into the campaign's final stretch.

With just 25 days to go in Campaign 2012 and throngs of people already voting, Obama and Romney will try to answer two questions that their running mates posed to the tens of millions of Americans who watched Thursday's hard-fought, 90-minute debate.

"Who do you trust?" Biden asked.

"Wouldn't it be nice to have a job-creator in the White House?" asked Ryan.

Biden, eager to make up for the president's lackluster performance in his first debate with Romney, played the aggressor throughout. And the president gave his running mate a quick thumbs up for delivering with the energy and feeling that he did not.

"His passion for making sure that the economy grows for the middle class came through so I'm really proud of him," Obama said after watching the debate aboard Air Force One on the way home after a day of campaigning in battleground Florida.

Ryan came back at the vice president with harsh talking points, a flurry of statistics and a sharp economic warning: In another Obama term, he said, "Watch out, middle class, the tax bill's coming to you."

Romney, who watched the debate at the end of a campaign day in North Carolina, got on the phone to Ryan immediately afterward to congratulate him. Ann Romney told a rally in the western Michigan town of Hudsonville on Friday that the debate showed why her husband chose Ryan as his running mate.

"What he saw in Paul was a level head, very smart. You can tell, it came through, the kind of character that this man has," Mrs. Romney said.

Ryan declined to engage in any morning-after analysis while stopping for breakfast with his family Friday at Josie's diner in Lexington on his way out of Kentucky. All he would allow is that he felt great about how the debate turned out.

Attention now shifts to the two remaining debates between Obama and Romney: Tuesday's "town hall" style faceoff in Hempstead, N.Y., and a final showdown, over foreign policy, on Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

And the campaigns get right back into the thick of it on Friday, looking for ways large and small to shift more voters their direction in the small number of states whose electoral votes are still up for grabs: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Romney headed to Virginia and after was linking up with Ryan in Ohio. Biden and wife Jill will woo young voters at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Obama will spend a rare day in Washington, preparing for the next two debates and taking campaign contest winners out to eat.

With so little time left in the countdown to Nov. 6, "every day, every hour counts," said Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago mayor who served as Obama's first White House chief of staff. "Everything counts."

The president has set aside a serious chunk of time for preparation after being faulted for underestimating the importance of his first debate with Romney. He'll be hunkered down in Williamsburg, Va., from Saturday until Tuesday rehearsing with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, acting as a proxy for Romney.

Romney's return to Ohio this weekend signals the importance of a state seen by both sides as decisive to the whole election. Obama holds the edge there, polls show.

Obama had to hope that Biden's solid showing on Thursday was enough to shift a campaign dynamic that has had the momentum moving Romney's way since the first debate. Romney, for his part, had to hope Ryan's performance would keep up the good karma for the GOP.

The running mates clearly sensed that the stakes were higher than usual for their faceoff, and both played hardball throughout, frequently interrupting one another and challenging one another's assertions.

On television's split screens, Biden's body language ? a montage of pained smiles, winces, head shakes and eye rolls ? often screamed incredulity when Ryan was speaking.

"I know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground," Ryan shot back at Biden at one point, "but I think people would be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other."

In one of the night's lighter moments, Ryan helpfully provided a translation of one of Biden's putdowns.

"This is a bunch of stuff," Biden said of Ryan's dismissive characterization of the president's Iran policy.

"What does that mean, a bunch of stuff?" asked moderator Martha Raddatz of ABC News.

"It's Irish," Ryan offered.

"It is," Biden agreed, to laughter from the audience. "We Irish call it malarkey."

At another point, Ryan used Biden's own history of gaffes to explain away Romney's much-criticized comment dismissing the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes, a comment Biden brought up repeatedly after Obama had failed to mention it in his debate.

"I think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way," Ryan said.

There were spirited exchanges on taxes, abortion, Medicare, Libya, and more. It may not have broken new ground, but the conversation gave viewers a clear illustration of the sharp choices before them come Election Day.

"In case you haven't noticed, we have strong disagreements," Biden said in his closing statement. And then he distilled the Democrats' campaign pitch into a simple bid to give anxious Americans "a little bit of peace of mind."

Ryan then spoke of the "big choice" in this election, and argued that Obama had had his chance and failed.

"This is not what a real recovery looks like," he said. "You deserve better."

For all the political back-and-forth during the past two months, the race essentially stands where it was in August, before the two national political conventions, with the two candidates running about even in national polls.

There's been no shortage of drama in between: the revelation of Romney's caught-on-tape comment about the 47 percent, Biden's remark that the middle class has been "buried" in the past four years, Obama's weak showing in the first debate, the ongoing tussle over the administration's handling of the attack that left four Americans dead in Benghazi, Libya, and more.

With turnout critical, both campaigns are devoting considerable energy to ensuring that supporters are registered to vote and taking advantage of the early voting options available in many states. Nearly a million Americans already have voted.

The Democrats' monthlong "gotta vote" bus tour will be in Milwaukee on Friday, just in time to rev up supporters for the opening of Wisconsin's early voting season on Monday.

And both sides are keeping up the push for campaign contributions to keep the battleground-state airwaves full of political ads. Within a few hours of the debate, Romney, Obama and Biden all emailed supporters asking for more cash.
