iPhone 6 to feature car adjustment tech with iOS 7?

The iPhone 6 may be able to adjust your car settings with a new patent filed, adding to iOS 7's in-car features

The iPhone 6 may feature technology that allows you to adjust your car from your iDevice.

The patent, filed on the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows the ability to tune the radio into your preferred station, adjust mirrors and seat position so if you share a car, you can make it perfect for your needs with the tap of a screen.

Features you will be able to change include the mirrors, seat and steering wheel position, so whether you share a car with a partner/husband/wife/friend or you use a hire car on a regular basis, it can certainly take the pain out of changing your settings every time you get in the car.

The patent says, 'A user's portable electronic device can learn configuration preferences from a first environment, such as the user's car, and when the user visits another similar environment, such as a rented automobile, those configuration preferences can be imported into the visited environment and used to automatically configure the environment according to the imported preferences.'

iOS in the car was detailed in the iOS 7 launch in May and allows you to connect your iPhone to your car's entertainment system.

It's thought the tecnology could be integrated into iOS 7, although it hasn't been identified in the code of any versions up to iOS 7 beta 4 which launched last week.

The iPhone 6 is said to be launching in 2014 and may include a larger screen of around 4-inches, A7 processor and 12-megapixel camera. The iPhone 5S and iPhone Light are said to be launching in September this year.

Use These Tips For A Dynamic Internet Marketing Campaign

If you want to draw in as many customers as possible, why not try Internet promotion? It may look simple, but it takes research and dedication in order to make Online marketing work for you. Here are some suggestions to follow, and before you know it, you will be an expert.

Limited time offers and promotions can be beneficial to an eCommerce site?s PageRank. The better your offer, the more outside sites will promote your business. This is similar to a store selling a loss leader item to turn a profit later.

If you are interested in having others link to your website, create a link that is readily available to them on your site. Those who have websites that complement yours will gladly add your link to their site. That ensures that visitors to their site will see, and perhaps click, on the link.

TIP! You need to use everything you can in Internet marketing. If you or your company falls behind the curve, your potential customers will catch on and begin to doubt your abilities.

When you are using signatures, link them to your site or email. If you post to a forum, add your link to your signature so that it will be seen every time one of your posts is read. Also link to your website at the end of every email you send. Signatures are a great way to spread the word about your site as well as increasing its page rank in search engines. Create intrigue with interesting text so the readers will feel the need to click your link.

Give your customers a reason to visit your website. You don?t need to create an entire encyclopedia, but having a good amount of information that your customers can easily access is important. To increase the potential to your website add content that will help your prospective customers, such as articles, product reviews and other information pertaining to your product.

Post images and video relevant to your business to increase interest in your website. When your site or blog features a video, you have a stronger way to keep your customers?s focus on the site and your products. Using an interesting picture and title will get a customer?s attention.

TIP! It is vital to have a client mailing list. Post notification on your website to collect emails.

Remember to use emphasis tools when you are creating text for your website. You can enhance the visibility and importance of words and phrases by making them bold, underlining them, or italicizing them. You can get your point across if you find out how your customers like being communicated with.

It can be easy to overspend on advertising. If it will not work for you, do not spend money on it. Banner advertising will give you an appropriate return on your investment in the long term.

It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on a consultant for your marketing business as there are many resources available online to help you decide on your marketing approach. There are forums where you can interact with other business professionals, as well as conferences and articles.

TIP! You need to research and treat Internet marketing serious. If you can find a mentor that has gone through the process, they may be able to provide you with invaluable information from their experience.

If you?re going to use banners on your website, use ones that don?t look like the typical banners you see elsewhere. Do not let them know that it is really a link. Many people won?t click banners if they look like banners, so this can entice them.

A good way in which to get the humanitarians on your side in an online business is to make sure that you?re donating a portion of your proceeds to some type of charity. Clearly advertise this to the visitors, but don?t do it excessively. Even a small donation can increase your sales, as people like to know their money is going to a good cause.

Tailor your banner ads to deviate from what people would expect a normal banner ad to look like. If you improve the appearance of your banner ad, you will be able to get more people to click it.

TIP! With any kind of marketing, you are going to run into setbacks. The best thing to do is deal with them and keep on going.

Know how to code HTML tags. These tags indicate the important content on your page and will display it in different levels of bold. The content you emphasize through HTML tags will be picked up by search engines. Be sure to highlight your critical keywords.

Try incorporating different headlines into your site and on any E-zines you put out. Headlines should contain catch phrases and showcase the items for are offering. You may even want to abandon the headline altogether and replace it with a graphic of your product. Graphics create a professional headline that sells with images instead of text.

TIP! Creating a FAQ section on your website will make running it a more satisfactory venture for you. It will also please your potential customers because they will be able to locate answers to their concerns quickly and easily.

If you have free material, consider advertising it on sites or directories that showcase free services and products. Several directories, for example, have free e-zines. There are many resources to get free e-zines, e-books and other free infomation.

People respect those in power. Don?t be afraid to let it be known that you are indeed the head honcho. Do not hesitate to call yourself a president or a CEO.

As you can see, online marketing is a great way to promote products. You really need to figure out what you are supposed to do in order to be a successful Internet marketer. The following information may help to further your Internet marketing education.

TIP! Take time to learn web design basics. You can find online courses that will teach you HTML, CSS and many other programs that assist with web design.

Stocks open slightly lower after disappointing jobs data

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange at the end of the trading day on August 1, 2013 in New York City.

Stocks closed modestly higher in thin volume on Friday despite a tepid jobs report. While the data was disappointing, it still showed job growth and may also make the Federal Reserve a bit more hesitant about curtailing its stimulus policies in September.

The U.S. economy created just 162,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in July after a downwardly revised 188,000 in June. The unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent.

The quality of the jobs being created is also an issue. Burt White of LPL Financial pointed out, "Over the last four months we've created 4.2 part-time jobs for every one full-time job. That trend is not going in a good direction."

After spending the session clawing back morning losses, the Dow Jones Industrial Average?finished 30 points higher at 15,658.36. The?S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended with slight gains, while both the S&P and Dow set new closing highs.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, fell to 12.1.

Among S&P sectors, consumer discretionary and materials stocks led the gainers. Energy fell after disappointing earnings from oil giant Chevron.

"I think the market grinds higher," Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management, said. "We're not going to go up another 18 percent as we have since the first of the year in my opinion. But I think the market ends higher than where it is today."

The jobs data may push back the timing, or at least scale, of a potential Fed tapering of its bond-buying program.

St. Louis Fed president James Bullard said in a speech Friday that the central bank "needs to see more data" before it makes a decision about slowing the pace of its $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program.

(Read more: So-so summer: Job growth disappoints; rate drops)

Some economists, meanwhile, see just a small reduction in bond purchases next month.

"I think they'll only do $15 billion because the evidence will be still somewhat ambiguous," BNY Mellon economist Richard Hoey told CNBC of the potential cutback in bond purchases. "I don't think they'll do $25 billion. That's too strong a measure."

In other data, U.S. consumer spending increased 0.5 percent in June, lifted by automobile purchases and higher gasoline prices. Personal incomes rose 0.3 percent. June factory orders, meanwhile, rose 1.5 percent after an upwardly revised 3 percent in May.

(Read more: Escape velocity hopes give way to law of gravity)

Cable stocks rose on reports that Cox Communications and Charter Communications held merger talks. Cablevision was up sharply as well.

Viacom, meanwhile, reported a 14 percent rise in revenue helped by strong advertising and CBS affiliate fees at its cable networks. The media giant also doubled its stock buyback program to $20 billion.

LinkedIn shares surged following better-than-expected earnings and after a number of brokers hiked their price targets on the social networking firm.

AIG stock rose after the company posted strong earnings and said it would return capital to shareholders.

But oil giant?Chevron posted a 26 percent decline in net income?due to lower oil prices and maintenance work at its U.S. refineries.

'Golden Girls' Dollhouse For Sale On Etsy Is A Miniature Replica Of Our Favorite T.V. Ladies' Home (PHOTOS)

We were in awe when we came across an artist that created detailed floor plans of our favorite T.V. homes. But another Etsy seller may have just trumped that. EverydayMiniatures designed a "Golden Girls" dollhouse to replicate the fabulous Miami home of Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia.

These ladies taught us a thing or two about decorating along the way (mostly having to do with wild wallpaper prints, bamboo furniture and fake plants), and this seller didn't miss a beat. And if you look closely, you'll see he included some hallmarks that only a true fan would understand, like Rose's painting of St. Olaf, Dorothy's bike helmet and, of course, a cheesecake. "After watching several thousand hours of the show over 20 years, I created this 1:72 scale playset. The model took me a few weeks to design and then a few days to build," he wrote on the listing.

Unfortunately for us, some lucky buyer swept in and grabbed the only edition for the listed price of $179, according to Jezebel. But let's keep our fingers crossed that this is the first of many mini homes this designer makes.

Damon worked out 4 hours a day for 'Elysium'

Celebs

Jennifer Aniston recently confessed she existed on veggies, lean protein and kale to get in shape to play a stripper in "We're the Millers." And now Matt Damon is revealing that he tackled a tough workout schedule to get buff for his new movie, "Elysium."

IMAGE: Matt Damon

Kimberley French / Sony Pictures

Matt Damon bulked up for "Elysium."

"Elysium" director Neill Blomkamp did some makeshift Photoshopping to show Damon, 42, the shape he wanted. Blomkamp "actually had a picture with my face tacked onto this guy with this body, and they literally hired me a trainer and I went to him with the picture," Damon told Variety. "It was four hours a day in the gym -- and I?m not 26 anymore, but I got in shape."

In the sci-fi movie, which opens Aug. 9, Damon plays a factory worker who must break into the protected rich-people space habitat of Elysium, or die trying.

Damon wasn't Blomkamp's first choice to play the role -- rapper Eminem was.?

"That's true -- people have been asking that," Damon acknowledged to the magazine. "Probably half of the movies I do have somebody else's fingerprints on them. It's the nature of the business. I've passed on things other actors have taken. You never know exactly what the alchemy is going to be. Sometimes you end up with somebody and you can't believe that wasn't your first choice the whole time. I've always felt the right actor gets the part."

Senate measure generously funding transportation, housing programs faces GOP roadblock

WASHINGTON ? A measure awarding generous funding to road and bridge projects, community development grants and housing help for the poor is running into stiff Republican opposition in the Senate.

The bill appeared likely to fall prey Thursday to a filibuster by Republicans unhappy that the legislation breaks through budget limits required by automatic spending cuts known as budget sequestration.

?Voting for appropriations legislation that blatantly violates budget reforms already agreed to by both parties moves our country in exactly, exactly the wrong direction,? Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.

Far more austere companion legislation was pulled off the House floor Wednesday because, top lawmakers said, GOP leaders lacked the votes to pass it. The House Appropriations Committee chairman, Rep. Harold Rogers, R-Ky., said it was time to go back to the drawing board and come up with a compromise with congressional Democrats and the White House.

Taken together, the likely failure of both measures illustrates the shortcomings of the budget strategies by Republicans controlling the House and Democrats in charge of the Senate. At issue are the 12 spending bills passed each year by Congress for the day-to-day working of the government.

House GOP leaders pulled the measure from the floor after detecting opposition from both conservatives and more moderate members. Democrats were united against the bill and its steep cuts to Amtrak, transportation and housing programs, and community development grants.

?There are some folks that have a hard time voting for any appropriation bill and then there are some folks (for whom) this was probably a difficult vote ?, with Amtrak and block grants and stuff,? said Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, author of the transportation and housing measure. Aides to top Republicans like Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California maintained that the measure was scuttled because there wasn?t enough time in the House?s crowded schedule.

Without a broader House-Senate budget agreement in place, the two chambers of Congress have been trying to advance starkly different versions of the 12 appropriations bills, with little success in the House and virtually none in the Senate.

The Senate measures have been drafted to reflect higher budget levels originally called for in a budget deal enacted two years ago. But that deal called for automatic spending cuts known as sequestration if lawmakers could not pass follow-up deficit cuts, and the House spending bills have been drawn to those sequestration levels, which are more than $90 billion lower ? a huge, unbridgeable difference in the approximately $1 trillion budget for daily agency operations.

Congress heads out of Washington this week for a five-week vacation, leaving the mess to be dealt with in the fall. GOP leaders had sought to set up a budget showdown this summer with the need to pass legislation increasing the government?s $16.7 trillion borrowing cap. But the government?s better-than-expected fiscal performance has delayed that showdown into the fall.

President Barack Obama says he won?t negotiate over the debt limit like he did two years ago, a promise he repeated to his House and Senate allies in closed-door meetings on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

The situation on the House and Senate transportation measures reflects the broader dysfunction in Washington over the budget. All sides want to reverse the crippling sequestration cuts, but a partisan impasse over tax increases sought by Obama and his Democratic allies and cuts to so-called mandatory programs like Medicare and food stamps demanded by Republicans shows no signs of breaking.

Cuts in the House transportation measure were made deeper by a Republican move to cut an additional $40 billion-plus from domestic programs and transfer the money to the Pentagon. That left the transportation measure $10 billion, or about 18 per cent, below the Senate?s bill.

Rogers, who typically is cautious in his public statements, issued an unusually harsh blast, saying halting debate on the House measure reflected a failure of Republicans to follow up on their promises to cut spending with binding legislation.

?With this action, the House has declined to proceed on the implementation of the very budget it adopted just three months ago,? Rogers said. He said the failed transportation and housing measure was the first major attempt by Republicans to pass an appropriations bill at levels consistent with the sequestration cuts and said the failure of the bill meant it was time for a new approach.

?The House, Senate and White House must come together as soon as possible on a comprehensive compromise that repeals sequestration, takes the nation off this lurching path from fiscal crisis to fiscal crisis, reduces our deficits and debt, and provides a realistic topline discretionary spending level to fund the government in a responsible ? and attainable ? way,? Rogers said.

On that, at least, there was agreement.

?The collapse of the partisan transportation and housing bill in the House proves that their sequestration-on-steroids bills are unworkable, and that we are going to need a bipartisan deal to replace sequestration,? said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., chief author of the Senate bill.

Baltimore, Maryland (PRWEB) August 01, 2013

Around the Wherever: Another interesting meal at Urban in ...

I met a friend for dinner at Urban in KL tonight. I believe that Urban is now my favorite restaurant in Kaiserslautern; I've visited before and wrote a review about the food, which is flavorful and the service, which is surprisingly pleasant.

At tonight's meal, my friend commented how their specials are often very odd yet interesting and usually tasty. The restaurant tries to offer international dishes. We thought that the concept was good, the methodology a bit strange, and thankfully, the food was tasty but not close to the cuisine it was trying to mimic.

Tonight's special was quite reasonably priced: it was a main course, a drink, and an appetizer or a dessert for 10 euros. One could choose between Mexican or Italian dishes.

I chose the Mexican nachos. They were made with the tortilla chips that are similar to Doritos because they have some sort of cheese powder on them. They aren't to my liking, but at least they tasted better than the nachos I had at Sam Kulman's. They also were covered by a faux meat made of soy, which was flavorful and tasty.

For the main meal, I was very dubious about the vegetarian Mexican choice: it was soy "meat" served in a crepe with sour cream on the side. How a crepe is considered Mexican is beyond me. I asked if it might be possible to get the filling in the meal served in a tortilla since another dish had tortillas. It wasn't an option so I decided to live on the wild side and order the Mexican crepe.

It was not a mistake to order this dish; it was actually quite tasty, with the same flavorful, spiced soy "meat" filling as was used on the nachos. The crepe was savory and went well with the soy. It was served with a small side salad of lettuce, shredded carrots, and the ubiquitous (in Germany, at least) corn.

As is typical with Urban's ethnic dishes, this meal was not authentic for the cuisine it was emulating, but it was tasty nonetheless. I decided that this Mexican meal served on a French crepe reminded me more, taste-wise, of Ethiopian food. The crepe tasted slightly like Ethiopian injera (spongy bread) without the vinegary taste, and the soy filling reminded me of the vegetables one eats with the injera.

My Mexican-French-Ethiopian meal was good and I'd go back. After all, what will Urban come up with next?

Campaign against illegal immigrants strains coalition

By Andrew Osborn

LONDON (Reuters) - An advertising campaign designed to get illegal immigrants to leave Britain opened up a rift in the government on Monday when Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman said it was working but his coalition partner said the idea was "offensive".

The trial campaign saw two vans drive around six London boroughs in the last week displaying billboards telling illegal immigrants to "Go Home or Face Arrest", part of a wider government crackdown aimed at reducing net migration - the numerical difference between people coming in and out of the country.

Urging people to contact the authorities "for free advice, and help with travel documents", the posters carried a big picture of a pair of handcuffs and reported how many illegal immigrants had been arrested in the last week.

Voluntary immigrant returns were the "most cost-effective" way of reducing illegal migration, officials said.

Immigration is a hot button issue in Britain, where Cameron is trying to stop an exodus of voters from his ruling Conservatives to a populist anti-immigration party before a parliamentary election in two years' time.

Conservative strategists believe the campaign will be popular with many voters, but the topic is an uncomfortable one for Cameron's junior coalition partner, the left-leaning Lib Dems.

Keen to distance themselves from the Conservatives in voters' minds before the next election, they have abandoned ideas for an amnesty for illegal immigrants and now advocate a tougher approach.

But they have bridled at the ad campaign.

'STUPID AND OFFENSIVE'

Business Secretary Vince Cable, a Lib Dem, called it "stupid and offensive", saying he thought it very unlikely to be continued.

"It is designed, apparently, to sort of create a sense of fear in the British population that we have a vast problem of illegal immigration. We have a problem, but it's not a vast one," Cable told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show on Sunday.

He said the Lib Dems had not been consulted about the initiative.

But a spokesman for Cameron, who is on holiday in Portugal, said on Monday that the prime minister didn't agree with Cable's criticism. "No is the short answer," the spokesman told reporters when asked whether he agreed the campaign was "stupid and offensive".

"The pilot is already working. The pilot is about targeting people who are here illegally and giving them the opportunity to leave the country voluntarily rather than be arrested, detained and removed."

The government would review the pilot's success and examine how and whether the campaign could be continued, he added, saying there had been "a great deal of interest" from illegal immigrants in the scheme.

Cameron has ruled with the Lib Dems since 2010, but the two have taken increasingly different positions on issues such as Britain's role in Europe and on reform of Britain's unelected upper house of parliament.

Many traditional supporters of the Lib Dems felt alienated when they struck a coalition deal with the Conservatives, a centre-right party, and have been further disenchanted by what they see as the coalition's "lurch to the right" on immigration and welfare policy.

Emerging problem for Chinese airports - mobs of raging passengers

BEIJING, China - Violent attacks have erupted at airports across China, with passengers venting their rage on hapless staff over a summer of grinding delays.

China has spent billions on building some of the largest and most modern airports in the world, but, much to everyone's embarrassment, it seems unable to get planes to fly between them on time.

Last month, only 18 per cent of the 22,000 flights out of Beijing's Capital airport departed on schedule, according to the aviation research company FlightStats, making it the world's worst major airport for punctuality. Not one Chinese airport managed to get even half of its flights to leave on time.

The delays have seen mobs of angry passengers mount at least eight large protests at departure gates in the past two months, during two of which staff were attacked. There is even a new Chinese phrase for the rampaging hordes: the "kong nu zu", or "air rage tribe".

On Thursday July 18, more than 30 passengers broke through security and stormed the runway at Nanchang airport after being delayed for seven hours by bad weather.

The weekend before, passengers in Shanghai tried to rip off an attendant's name badge before hitting her. In the subsequent fracas, two airport staff were injured and three passengers arrested. "The passengers were very emotional and unstable," Ni Xuying, one of the injured employees, told state television.

At the end of June, a primary school teacher lost control when her flight from Wenzhou to Beijing was cancelled, slapping and kicking an Air China attendant to the ground. "I waited there for such a long time. Nobody served me a bottle of water or a piece of cake or anything," Liu Weiwei said in her defence.

In March, Graham Fewkes, a British businessman based in Hong Kong, told the South China Morning Post he had witnessed cheers when a passenger assaulted a stewardess on a delayed flight to the island of Sanya.

"The other passengers were applauding as the man was hitting her," he said.

Hong Kong Airlines last year said it had an average of three incidents involving disruptive passengers every week and has introduced training in wing chun, a form of kung fu, for its cabin crew.

The situation at China's airports is now so volatile that staff have been told not to announce any major delays.

The problems have been caused by a sudden surge in air traffic, flowing into skies that are tightly controlled by the People's Liberation Army. With only a few permitted routes, issues such as bad weather often force airlines to hold back flights rather than divert them.

The heavy delays are exacting an economic cost. Marco Pearman-Parish at Corporation China, a consultancy that helps companies establish a presence in China, said some 60 per cent of his clients at a recent meeting were considering moving their operations away from Beijing because of the constant problems at the airport. "The delays are making it impossible to do business," he said.

Troicki appeals ban for skipping blood-doping test

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Serbian tennis player Victor Troicki will appeal to sports' highest court to fight his 18-month suspension for failing to provide a blood test.

Troicki says he will trust the Court of Arbitration for Sport to recognize "a clear mistake from the on-site doping control officer."

The 2010 Davis Cup winner says he declined to give blood at the Monte Carlo Masters in April because he felt ill.

Troicki insists the doping control officer advised he could "skip the test if I wrote an explanation letter" to the International Tennis Federation.

The ITF suspended Troicki on Thursday after its tribunal said his explanation "did not constitute compelling justification."

Troicki says of the doping control officer, "once she found out that she didn't follow the procedures, she turned her back on me."

Facebook shares soar 30 percent on big 2Q

Originally published July 25, 2013 at 9:34 AM | Page modified July 25, 2013 at 3:58 PM

Facebook shares soared 30 percent Thursday after the social media giant pushed aggressively into mobile advertising and reported much-improved second-quarter revenue and profit.

The stock is trading at levels not seen since shortly after Facebook's initial public offering last year. The IPO was plagued by nagging questions about whether the world's biggest social network could follow users on to the mobile phones and tablets that have upended the technology sector.

Facebook began showing mobile advertisements for the first time last spring. It reported after the market closed Wednesday that those ads accounted for 41 percent of its total advertising revenue in the most-recent quarter.

Overall revenue jumped 53 percent to $1.81 billion for the period. It also reversed a year-ago loss.

Those numbers evaporated doubts about Facebook's ability to capitalize on the mobile market, and trading volume in the company's shares rocketed Thursday.

Facebook's stock jumped 30 percent in Thursday's trading to close at $34.36.

Facebook Inc., based in Menlo, Calif., priced its stock at $38 when it went public in May 2012.

Goldman Sachs said Thursday that with concern about the company's growth prospects compounding monthly, everyone had been waiting for a breakout quarter.

The recent quarter, Goldman believes, should help mitigate those fears.

In addition to Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, BMO Capital Markets, Jefferies & Co. and Wedbush raised their price targets for the stock.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter called Facebook a "new king of phones," and said he expects revenue growth to be supplemented next year, as Facebook starts making money from its Instagram photo and video-sharing service.

What's Snooki's Dream Wedding Dress? A Leopard Print Gown!

UPDATE: In response to her wedding dress rumors, Snooki?tweeted?this afternoon:?"LOL at this story of wanting a leopard print gown. Your source is wrong again, I haven't even looked yet. #TryAgain."

??

Apparently, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi wants her walk down the aisle to be a walk on the wild side as well.

For her nuptials to baby daddy Jionni LaValle, the former Jersey Shore star is considering an animal-print wedding dress.

That's right, a source tells E! News that while shopping for her bridal gown: "Snooki was saying she wanted either a leopard- or a tiger-striped wedding dress. Everyone around her was like, ?You've got to be kidding.' But she wasn't. She was dead serious."

PHOTOS: Stars' Vera Wang wedding gowns

Snooki wouldn't be the first start to skip the traditional white hue. Jessica Biel and Anne Hathaway wore pink on their big days and most recently Tina Turner donned a green Giorgio Armani when she tied the knot to longtime love Erwin Bach in Switzerland over the weekend.

Mind you, a big cat patterned wedding dress might be a first for Hollywood. Then again, Snooki was never much of a fashion follower?just take a look at? her unique sunglasses line for kids!

NASA's IRIS telescope offers first glimpse of sun's mysterious atmosphere

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The moment when a telescope first opens its doors represents the culmination of years of work and planning -- while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a wealth of research and answers yet to come. It is a moment of excitement and perhaps even a little uncertainty. On July 17, 2013, the international team of scientists and engineers who supported and built NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, all lived through that moment. As the spacecraft orbited around Earth, the door of the telescope opened to view the mysterious lowest layers of the sun's atmosphere and the results thus far are nothing short of amazing. The data is crisp and clear, showing unprecedented detail of this little-observed region.

Royal Baby Name Is Classic and Boring

The London bookmakers were spot on: The royal baby will be called George Alexander Louis.

Kate Middleton and Prince William's child will be given the formal title of His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

The little prince's name is unsurprising, according to a baby name expert, following the steadfast tradition of the British monarchy.

"George and Alexander were the two names with the shortest odds," Laura Wattenberg, baby name expert and creator of babynamewizard.com, told LiveScience. "It is precisely what everyone thought they would do." [The Most Popular and Unique Baby Names]

However, what Prince George's friends and future subjects will call him may not be the name his parents gave him.

Tradition key

All of the royal baby's names are nods to tradition and family heritage, with Queen Elizabeth's father and grandfather both going by the moniker King George. It's also a quintessential British appellation.

"George is the ultimate English name, thanks to St. George, the patron saint of England," Wattenberg said.

Queen Victoria's given name was Alexandrina, and her daughter was Alexandra, Queen of Denmark. And the name Louis has cropped up in several royal families, Wattenberg said.

It was unlikely the royals would go for anything other than the most traditional name, Wattenberg said. Tradition is key, because although Queen Elizabeth is technically the head of Parliament, the royal family no longer plays a key role in political intrigues or the day-to-day running of the country.

"Tradition is what they're all about ? it's what keeps them going, and it's important to honor that in this situation," Wattenberg said. "There's a branding of the monarchy that they had to maintain." [7 Crazy Ways the Royal Baby's Birth is Unique]

Copycats unlikely

Celebrity names often spur a rash of copycats, Wattenberg said. The fame factor is important for rare baby names, such as Jaden, which rose in the ranks after actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith gave that name to their son.

But though the little Prince George of Cambridge may be the most famous baby in the world, his name probably won't be sweeping the United States, anyway.

With a commonplace name such as George, "it's hard to see the needle move because it's already so saturated in the populations," Wattenberg said.

"We've had two president Georges in recent years and it had absolutely no impact on the name," Wattenberg said. "Even if you don't think George Bush would have been a likely candidate to make it stylish, George Clooney didn't help it either. You have to wonder in this country how much another George can do."

Princely nickname?

And though the prince may be named George, there's no guarantee that he'll eventually become King George or even be called George in the popular press. Queen Victoria took up her middle name when she ascended to the throne, and Prince Harry's given name is actually Henry.

Even little George's namesake, Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, was actually named Albert. He took up the more classically English name around the time of World War II, worried that the name Albert sounded too German.

"The name they rule under isn't always the name they were given," Wattenberg said.

(AP) ? Univision Radio Network yanked the Spanish-language talk show host known as "Piolin" from the air, canceling his syndicated program that urged listeners to rally for immigration reform and pushed Hispanics to wield their election clout.

Monica Talan, a Univision spokeswoman, on Tuesday confirmed that the morning show "Piolin por la Manana," hosted by Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo, had been dropped. She declined to provide a reason.

Talan said for now, music will be played in the absence of the animated Mexican-born disc jockey whose nickname means "Tweety Bird." He joined the station in 2004.

Sotelo rose to fame when he and other Spanish-language DJs used the airwaves in 2006 to propel immigrant supporters en masse into the streets of cities across the country to rally for immigrant rights.

Sotelo's program was peppered with pranks and jokes, but he also interviewed President Barack Obama and other politicians. He urged Hispanics to naturalize so they could vote, and became an American citizen himself at a 2008 ceremony teeming with media.

Javier Novoa, 50, said he liked the way Sotelo interviewed psychologists, immigration experts and financial gurus and imparted their wisdom to his audience. Novoa said he listened regularly to the program on his way to work selling CDs in downtown Santa Ana but lately found he was getting more music and less talk over the airwaves.

"It's surprising to me because this was a very good program, a lot of people listened to it," he said of the decision to pull Sotelo off the air.

Last month, Sotelo's show lagged behind Ricardo "El Mandril" Sanchez's program in the Los Angeles-Orange County market's Arbitron ratings for morning shows. Both shows play regional Mexican music.

"El Mandril" was listed in the No. 1 spot, while Sotelo's program was No. 6, the ratings showed.

Sotelo, who grew up in Santa Ana, is expected to be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in November. He often spoke of his own experience as an immigrant, crossing the border illegally in the 1980s, in an effort to inspire his listeners.

Immigrant advocates praised Sotelo for supporting the community in 2006 but said he didn't take on the issue as aggressively after the marches.

"He took time from his morning entertainment show to become the voice of the voiceless," said Jorge-Mario Cabrera, a spokesman for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. "For that, we will always be thankful."

On Tuesday morning, the station played music and commercials. Sotelo could not immediately be reached for comment, and no updates were posted on his Facebook page or Twitter feeds.

Wall Street edges up after strong earnings from Dow components

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks edged up on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 less than 3 points away from the 1,700 level, helped by solid earnings from blue-chips DuPont and United Tech and by China's efforts to avoid a hard landing for its slowing economy.

With earnings season in full swing, Apple Inc is due to report after the closing bell. The tech giant is expected to post a smaller quarterly profit and its financial report may come under intense scrutiny. The stock was down 0.3 percent at $425.31 in early trade.

, a Dow component, said it was looking to sell or spin off its performance chemicals unit to insulate itself from flagging sales of paint pigments that have weighed on profits. The stock jumped 4.7 percent to $59.91.

United Technologies Corp , the world's largest maker of elevators and air conditioners, raised the bottom end of its 2013 earnings forecast, citing its growing confidence after a jump in aerospace orders and cost cuts. The stock rose 2.4 percent to $104.72.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 44.08 points, or 0.28 percent, at 15,589.63. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 1.80 points, or 0.11 percent, at 1,697.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 3.23 points, or 0.09 percent, at 3,603.62.

Wall Street has moved higher in 11 of the past 12 market days. The S&P 500 closed at a third straight all-time high on Monday, and is now up about 20 percent for the year.

"Could the upward run continue? Yes," said David Brown, CEO at Sabrient Systems, an independent equity research firm in Santa Barbara, California.

"Funds continue to flow from money market and longer-term fixed income funds into the equity market. Valuations have not exceeded reasonable variations from the norm, a tad high here and there but with bargains remaining. The gains have not been powerful, large up days on large volume indicating a blow-off top."

Among the day's decliners, Netflix Inc shares fell 1.1 percent to $259.15, a day after the online-entertainment firm reported that its show "Arrested Development" lured new subscribers in the second quarter but not enough to impress investors.

United Parcel Service Inc posted a smaller quarterly profit as customers chose slower, cheaper shipping services, especially on international routes. The stock fell 0.1 percent to $87.49.

China must deepen reforms to address a slew of challenges confronting it, President Xi Jinping said in comments published on Tuesday that emphasize the government's determination to restructure the slowing economy. China shares listed in Hong Kong posted their biggest rise in nearly seven months on Tuesday.

HTC launches 'Emerging Devices' arm, reorganizes US operations

The Engadget Interview HTC President of Global Sales Jason McKenzie

HTC's attempts to dig itself out of its financial quagmire has seen some high-profile departures hogging the headline space beside its high profile devices. The latest boardroom shuffle concentrates on the company's American operations, which will now be headed up by former global sales head Jason Mackenzie (above right, playing rock-paper-scissors with Brad). At the same time, the company is establishing a new "Emerging Devices" unit, designed to focus on new products and "global distribution strategies," whatever that means.

Melatonin pre-treatment is a factor that impacts stem cell survival after transplantation

Melatonin pre-treatment is a factor that impacts stem cell survival after transplantation [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Jul-2013

Putnam Valley, NY. -- When melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, was used as a pre-treatment for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) prior to their transplantation into the brains of laboratory animals to repair damage from stroke, researchers in China found that the stem cells survived longer after transplantation. Previous studies had shown that 80 percent of transplanted MSCs died within 72 hours of transplantation. By contrast, the melatonin pre-treatment "greatly increased" cell survival, said the researchers.

The study appears as an early e-publication for the journal Cell Transplantation, and is now freely available on-line at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cog/ct/pre-prints/ct0998tang

The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland located in the center of the brain, but outside of the bloodbrain barrier. The melatonin it secretes acts as a signal and forms part of the system that regulates the sleepwake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering body temperature. Melatonin is also known to be a powerful antioxidant and has been used clinically to treat sleep disorders.

In this study, the researchers used a melatonin pre-treatment on MSCs they harvested from the laboratory animals that had been chemically modeled with ischemic brain injury (stroke). Previous studies had shown that MSCs "express" melatonin receptors M1 and M2.

"Mesenchymal cells can be harvested from self-donors (autologous) without ethical concerns," said study co-author Dr. Guo-Yuan Yang of the Neuroscience and Neuroengineering Research Center at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. "Studies have shown that MSCs differentiate into various cells and can, upon transplantation, improve functional recovery after ischemic brain injury. In this study we used laboratory rats chemically modeled with stroke and tried to determine if pretreatment with melatonin would promote cell survival."

Researchers transplanted pre-treated MSCs into one group of brain injured rats and also used a control group of animals that received MSCs that were not pre-treated with melatonin.

Study results demonstrated that the melatonin pre-treated MSCs had "enhanced survival under oxidative stimulation by activating the Erk1/2 pathway" (extracellular signal-regulated kinases), a chain of proteins in the cell that communicates a signal from a receptor on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell.

"Our study demonstrated increased survival of transplanted MSCs and revealed that the pre-treated MSCs reduced infarct volume and improved neurobehavioral outcomes for at least 14 days," said Dr. Yang.

The researchers noted that the impact of pre-treatment with melatonin was not MSC differentiation, and that development into mature brain cells was not an important factor in the beneficial effects derived from transplantation of either the untreated or the pre-treated cells. They suggested that the transplantation of MSCs pre-treated with melatonin may have a positive impact on the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF is a signal protein produced by cells that stimulate vascular and blood vessel growth that can help restore the oxygen supply to tissues when blood circulation is inadequate.

"Our study demonstrated that melatonin pre-treatment promoted MSC survival in the laboratory setting and augmented the therapeutic efficiency of MSCs in the rat brain. The protective effect of melatonin is achieved by activation of the Erk1/2 pathway," they concluded. "This strategy of pre-treating stem cells may represent a safe approach for improving the beneficial effects of stem cell therapy for cerebral ischemia."

"It is important to identify factors that can impact on the survival of stem cells following their potential therapeutic use for a variety of neurological disorders", said Dr. Shinn-Zong Lin, professor of Neurosurgery and superintendent at the China Medical University Hospital, Beigang, Taiwan. "This study suggests that melatonin pretreatment could be a factor and its role should be explored further with other disease models and other cell types".
