Home Remodeling Expected to Rebound | Real Estate & Homes For ...

After three years of slumping business, builders anticipate that the home remodeling and improvement sector will pick up in 2012, according to a recent article in The Orlando Sentinel.

During the recent National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Conference, NAHB researcher Paul Emrath, reported that remodeling was beginning to edge up.

In 2011, U.S. residential remodeling added up to an estimated $279 billion, about the same as in 2010 but down almost 15 percent from 2007. New-home starts have fallen more than 70 percent around the country since the market peak in 2005.

While not coming close to approaching that peak, The National Association of Home Builders is forecasting an almost 9 percent increase in remodeling this year and more than an 11 percent jump nationwide in 2013. Emrath attributes the slow rebound to the decline in house prices and a lack of equity.

More than half of the home remodeling projects last year cost in excess of $25,000, and total home remodeling and improvement expenditures now add up to more dollars than new-home construction, according to the builders association. Remodeling accounts for close to 70 percent of U.S. residential construction expenditures.

The biggest share of home improvement spending, roughly 20 percent, goes for exterior repairs or upgrades. But kitchen and bathroom jobs are a close second at 19 percent of remodeling work. Upper-end discretionary remodeling projects that were popular in housing?s hey-day, are expected to be few and far between. Until nationwide home values improve, homeowners are expected to be more conservative with their remodeling.

Previously foreclosed homes needing repairs will continue to be a benefit to remodelers. Lenders are also spending money to improve distressed homes, with Fannie Mae spending more than $600 million to repair foreclosed properties.

The large inventory of foreclosed homes currently on the market, stand to help the remodeling business for some time to come.

Increase Your Fitness At Home | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Many of us know that doing some form of exercise is important especially as we get older. For many, it?s a matter of staying healthy longer and staving off ailments that result from a sedentary lifestyle. For others, it is their need to reduce their weight which drives them to exercise. Whatever it is, many of you will be delighted to know that there are ways to keep fit without leaving the comforts of your home.

Exercising at home appeals to many people in various ways. Many are unable to go to a gym, or sports club or to attend fitness classes in today?s very hectic environment. Exercising at home cuts out sitting in traffic, remembering everything you need to pack in the gym bag, and nobody will be watching you while you exercise. You can wear whatever you want and split your exercise routine into manageable chunks spread throughout the day if you want to.

Among the many options of home exercise equipments available in the market, choosing one that fits you will depend on a host of factors. Prioritize first whether your main goal is to achieve a leaner body, be more flexible, or just to get fitter. An exercise ball, for example, may not be the appropriate piece of equipment for you if your goal is to run the marathon this year.

But if your aim is to have a leaner body or be more flexible, then the exercise ball or bands would fit your purpose perfectly. It?s great for stretching and flexing exercises, and they?re great for targeting specific areas of the body for muscle development.

A treadmill, stepping or rowing machine would be recommendable if you wish to get reasonably fit in a hurry. They are not only good at improving your stamina and fitness but also gives you excellent cardio workout while building leaner muscles at the same time. Outdoor activities like swimming, walking and jogging are also excellent alternatives for this type of training.

The proper, or sometimes improper, use of the equipment is crucial in determining the effectiveness of your workout. Even barbells, when used properly, can provide you with an excellent workout. Heavier weights, or more resistance, with fewer repetitions, will build muscle. Lower weights with more repetitions will increase your fitness level.

The advantage of having exercise equipment at home is that you can exercise whenever you want, for as long as you want. For example, if your schedule only allows you to spare 10 minutes for exercise in the morning before going to work and add another 20 minutes when you get back home, it is entirely up to you. If you have a free hour in the afternoon, you can exercise then. You don?t have to waste precious time preparing, driving to the gym, changing, and then driving back again. You don?t even have to spend on designer shoes or some expensive gear to make an impression, as no one but your family will see you anyway. Honestly speaking, it is even possible to increase your fitness level by staying at home and not even buying a single piece of equipment.

The Road to Hell and Good Intentions

All right so I find myself craving a post-apocalyptic One on One, but I want to try and make it...human I think is the word I'm looking for. I don't want a world that's been turned to ash by the destructive nature of man, instead I want a world that didn't bother to bat an eyelid while mankind wiped themselves out I want the kind of world that already started to grow right over the remains, turning cities back into jungles as the great testaments of man fall to ruin and natural process.

I also don't really care about the apocalyptic event, it is my idea that what actually happened is something no talks about, because those who survived it did so only at cost to their humanity. Besides what killed most of the human race isn't really important in this story, whats killing the last remnants of humanity, now that's what I'm interested in. The struggle, the question of when the will to live becomes murderous intent? Where is the line between scavenger and raider drawn? Is looting the dead any different depending on who pulled the trigger? When does the path of survival become the road to hell?

And now I'm just trying to sound deeper than I really am. I'm just looking for a partner who'd be interested in a post-apocalyptic story that focus' on the struggle and the effects it has on the human condition. I'm hopping for a gritty story that'll likely hit the deepest lows of human desperation. Yet at the same time I want to see the brightest parts of the darkest moments. Like I said I want the struggle, the joys and pains, the good and the bad.

I hope I"m making some semblance of sense to someone, but since It's quite likely that I'm just rambling I'm going to tack on my usual copy-paste of my style and what I'm looking for in a partner and see if I can't grab some interest for an Rp or two.

So for those who remain I'll start with the usual dribble about expectations and what not, I'm not going to determine a length to which you have to write, I myself can get...say four or five paragraphs regularly, more if the Rp really draws me in. There's always something interesting to write about the way I see it. Some odd little fact, or new depth, to add, if you take two paragraphs to describe how a the shimmer of a small stream or building looks in the sun and how it reminds your character of his/her childhood home, that's perfect, maybe not constantly relevant but I really don't care, it's interesting. I only write what I think is worth reading, there should be more to it than simple than back and forth interaction. Anyways I just got off on a mildly long tangent there. That describes length of posts, as to grammar, I don't worry about that all too much, it's likely I'll make the occasionally mistake in this interest check, I miss-spell words, I mess up my grammar, it happens, I don't care. If you can write coherently then I'll be happy.

In fact I'm more interested in a partner who can write creatively, think about the setting and write appropriately than anything else. There's a reason I don't just sit down and write books, I enjoy the secondary source of idea's that comes with roleplaying, I enjoy having to think of something new and different, that will sometimes even counter another player. As always, feel free to throw idea's out that I would never have thought of. Again just be able to realize what fits in the world we establish. One of my favorite books to date is American Gods by Neil Gaiman, it wasn't real in the faintest sense but damn if it couldn't have been. And while I don't remember the author of the following words they have always been the corner stone to which I prefer to write. When I write I do not try to create a world that escapes our own, my goal is not to think of everything that could be done. My goal is to create a world that you think might have existed, in a time long ago, or in a time far to come. You read the story and you wonder perhaps, maybe somewhere out there it's been possible, see the character less as what they are, characters, and more as those who could exist in that world, maybe they did, maybe they will. Again if anyone knows exactly who wrote the idea I'd appreciate finding out who it was, though I did paraphrase a bit, it's been a while.

Now I'd like if the characters are decent people at the core. I mean sure it's going to be harsh on the character at times, that's kind of what I'm hoping for. I enjoy that aspect, when good people are faced with absolute horror. Maybe it's just personal idealism, but I'd like to reflect those fighters that despite so much horror still cling to their faith, whatever it might be in. The struggle is for more than just shelter and food, but also hope and decency in a world that seemed to have run out.

Really it'll have no specific element, one day the characters might be laughing and enjoying themselves among the dead ruins of a city, the next they might be struggling to survive, or just struggling to keep their personal faith. Like I said I want no focus and when two people travel together for so long romance has a chance to form. However note the two key words, ?chance? and ?form? It'll be a slow long going process, with it's ups and downs, just because they're both decent people trying to get by doesn't mean they don't disagree after all. At the same time I'm just as happy to ignore romance all together. If it is present females only, I am male, my characters are male, that's that. So please do not give light characters, give me something real, something believable, a character that's still a person, one who made mistakes, who has dreams, failures, so on and so forth.

So I'll cease with my long winded and incredibly vague interest check and hope I manged to grab someone interest, or at least that I confused someone enough as to shoot me a PM anyways.

?The world is but a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. And I travel not to go anywhere, but to go, to learn. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to simply read.?

Apple's Cook invited to talk cancer and corporate America at NCCN ...

February 22, 2012 at 6:04 am

Apple?s Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook was invited to take part in a roundtable discussion at the National Comprehensive Cancer Network?s annual conference on clinical practice guidelines and quality cancer care. This year?s agenda centers around the topic of ?Cancer and Corporate America: Business as Usual?? The five-day discussion begins March 15 in Hollywood, Fla., and ABC News anchor Sam Donaldson will moderate it. The NCNN website listed Cook as an invitee, but there is no guarantee that Apple?s CEO will participate. The fact that a reputable organization invited him means Cook was informed of the conference in advance. A history of late Steve Jobs? illness gives some hope that Cook will contribute to the discussion. Other invites include doctors, cancer survivors, and other corporate figures, including IBM?s Senior Vice President of Human Resources J. Randall MacDonald.

Whether Cook will take part as a private person or as the CEO of Apple remains unknown, though it is possible he will discuss how Apple can give to medical research. The executive revealed at a recent internal meeting with employees that Apple donated $50 million to Stanford University hospitals, split into $25 million for a new main building and $25 million for a new children?s hospital.

(via The Tech Blog.)

Tim Cook, who presided over Apple?s supply chain for years in his op-chief capacity, occasionally managed the company on a day-to-day basis during Jobs? medical leaves of absence. Following Jobs? resignation on Aug. 24, 2011, Cook became the CEO per Apple?s succession planning. Jobs passed away at his Palo Alto on Oct. 5, a day after the public iPhone 4S launch. The official cause of death was respiratory arrest caused by his years-long battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer.

Face-Recognizing Billboard Only Displays Ad To Women

Plan-UK-digital-facial-recognition-adMoral ambiguity, thy name is advertising. How are we to parse this advertising campaign in London in which an intelligent bus stop billboard only displays its content to women? You read correctly: the billboard has a camera that scans passersby and if one stops to look, it determines their sex and shows them a 40-second video if they are female. Males only get a link to the advertiser's website. Now, does it change things if the advertiser is Plan UK, a non-profit organization trying to raise money towards the education of girls in third-world countries? And they don't show men because they wanted to give them "a glimpse of what it's like to have basic choices taken away"? Whether you find this commendable or reprehensible, you have to admit that the technology and implications are more than a little interesting.

The Expressing Level of Bradykinin B 2 ... - Cancer Research Center

[Abstract]

IntroductionBrain metastases from lung cancer and gliomas are the prevalent type of brain tumor. brain tumor capillaries have a blood ? tumor barrier ?BTB? that limits adequate delivery of antitumor agents to tumor tissue. So the effect of anti-tumor agents is very tiny. Recently, many scholars devote to the research of biochemical opening of the BTB with vasoactive compounds, the most effective compound opening the BTB is bradykinin or its analog receptor ? mediated perme-abilizer ? 7 ? RMP ? 7?. Studies have demonstrated that intracarotid infusion of bradykinin allows enhanced delivery of drugs across the BTB to brain tumors up to 12 times more than saline infusion alone, with no delivery to normal brain. Intracarotid infusion of bradykinin analog , RMP ? 7, selectively increases transport of carboplatin into brain tumor, which extends the survival of patients with glioma. Therefore , intracarotid infusion of bradykinin has been used to selectively open the BTB for the delivery of therapeutic drugs. But study suggested that there is very difference of increase of BTB permeability induced by bradykinin in brain tumors. We speculate that the variability in response of tumors to bradykinin is likely related to the expressing level of bradykinin B2 receptor of tumor. This study used metastases from lung cancer and gliomas samples to determine expressing level of bradykinin B2 receptor with immunohistochemistry ?SP? on those tumors and analyze the difference. The result would provide experimental basis for recognizing the reason for variability in response of brain tumors to bradykinin and clinical application of bradykinin.MethodsBradykinin B2 receptor of 30 patients of glioma and 20 patients of brain me-tastases from lung cancer were examined with immuno ? histochemistry ? SP? to analyze the expressing level of bradykinin B2 receptor on gliomas and brain me-tastases from lung cancer.ResultsThere was no expressing of bradykinin B2 receptor on brain metastases from lung cancer . But there was on glioma. Bradykinin B2 receptor localized on tumor cells. In three groups of different pathological grade of glioma. The expressing level of bradykinin B2 receptor expressed as the positive position area ratio of bradykinin B2 recptor, the results, the grade I and gradll ?2.51% ? 0.72%vs4.21% ?0.85%,n = 10,t=4.813,P

Lawyer of Palestinian hunger striker files appeal (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Palestinians chant slogans during a protest by all Palestinian factions in solidarity with Khader Adnan, 33, a senior member of Islamic Jihad jailed in Israel who has been on hunger strike for 62 days, in the northern West Bank village of Arrabeh, Friday, Feb. 17, 2012. (AP) ? As workers cleaned up the rubble of the century's deadliest prison fire, a collective rage built among relatives who gathered at the morgue and said the official explanation of a mattress fire killing 355 people was absurd.

Details of the investigation remained thin early Friday, and mystery swirled around the possible cause, from a crazed inmate who set fire to his bedding to rumors that gas cans were found inside and that guards deliberately set the blaze.

Family members said guards fired on prisoners to keep them from fleeing the flames, though guards and firefighters said they were shots in the air to summon help and to respond to what they thought was a prison break.

The attorney general's office said it was investigating all angles.

"It's impossible to believe that prisoners set the fire themselves when they too were going to die," said Felix Armando Cardona, 56, whose son, Luis Armando Cardona, 28, died in the blaze that broke out in Comayagua prison late Tuesday night.

From the time firefighters received a call at 10:59 p.m., what should have been a rescue became a catastrophe.

Only six guards were on duty, four in towers overlooking the prison and two overseeing 852 people crowded into a facility built for half that number. Some 57 percent had yet to be convicted, either awaiting trial or being held as suspected gang members, according to a government report.

Survivors said they watched helplessly as the guard who had the keys fled without unlocking their cells.

"He threw the keys on the floor in panic," said Hector Daniel Martinez, who was being held as a homicide suspect.

Martinez said an inmate who was not locked in because he also worked as a nurse picked up the keys and, braving the scorching heat, went from one cell block to another, opening doors.

"He went into the flames and started breaking the locks," said Jose Enrique Guevara, who was five years into an 11-year sentence for auto theft. "He saved us, I tell you."

About 100 relatives of the presumed dead gathered in tight knots outside a barricade manned by police and soldiers at the Tegucigalpa morgue, their faces etched in pain as they waited for a public address system to call the name of the latest identified victim.

Family of the few victims identified by late Thursday were escorted to a cinderblock building where Red Cross workers in white suits unloaded black plastic body bags arriving from the prison farm about 55 miles (90 kilometers) away.

Most wore surgical masks to ward off the heavy scent of decaying bodies. Loads of cheap brown wooden caskets pulled up aboard pickup trucks, apparently donated.

Prosecutors' spokesman Melvin Duarte said 25 forensic examiners were working around the clock, starting with the few bodies that weren't too charred to have finger prints.

Prisoners who survived unscathed or suffered only minor injuries remained inside the prison. Those with more serious injuries were taken to hospitals and were trickling back Thursday. Some were being treated inside by the nurse credited with saving many lives.

Miguel Angel Lopez, a guard on duty inside the prison, said he called the fire brigade as soon as he saw the blaze, but it took firefighters 30 minutes to get inside.

Fire officials told The Associated Press they were blocked from entering the prison for half an hour by guards who thought they had a riot or breakout on their hands.

Relatives are suspicious because Honduras has been the site of two other major prison fires, in 2003 and 2004, that killed a total of 176 inmates. Government officials were convicted of wrongdoing in the 2003 blaze, which investigators blamed on the guards.

Prison officials and the governor of Comayagua province originally said the fire was started by an inmate who screamed he was going to burn the place down in a cell phone call to the governor, Paola Castro.

On Thursday Castro said the call was actually a message from someone reporting the fire and that she accidentally erased it.

Officials then said prisoners told investigators that the fire started with a fight inside a prison barracks over a mattress.

One prisoner threatened to burn the mattress if the other didn't hand it over, said Elver Madrid, director of intelligence for Honduran national police. Madrid said his office currently considered that to be the most credible scenario.

"They're assassins," said Pedro Mejia, a weather-beaten, straw-hatted farmer whose son, Carlos David Mejia, died in Comayagua. His son had been there for six months while awaiting trial for the attempted robbery of a welding machine.

The U.S. State Department has criticized the Honduran government for harsh prison conditions, citing severe overcrowding, malnutrition, and lack of adequate sanitation.

The Inter American Court on Humans Rights issued a report in 2006 recommending measures to avoid prison overcrowding and training and equipment to deal with emergencies and evacuations after the fires in 2003 and 2004. It issued another critical report in 2010 noting that none of the changes had been made.

The State Department said it was sending Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigators to Honduras. The team will include forensic chemists, explosives enforcement officers and dogs that can sniff out explosives and accelerants.

Howard Berman, then-chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, questioned U.S. aid to Honduras last fall, saying human rights abuses involving security forces had "reached a distressing pitch."

"The most chilling aspect of this rather gruesome set of problems is that U.S. government assistance is flowing into the thick of it," Berman wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

WASHINGTON -- Scientists and engineers at the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) three national security laboratories appear committed to their work and core mission of maintaining the country's nuclear weapons stockpile, but according to a new National Research Council report, a "broken relationship" between NNSA and the labs threatens to erode the quality of the scientific research and engineering being conducted there.

The committee that wrote the report said that an intrusive degree of oversight stemming from past security and safety concerns at one of the labs has led to a "breakdown of trust." The committee added that the change in management and operations contractors at Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore in 2006 and 2007 -- while stressful and adding some $100 million annually to each of those laboratories' overhead -- is not the root cause of this problem.

Congress asked the Research Council to review the quality of scientific research and engineering at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The review is being carried out in two phases, and this first report focuses on how management of the laboratories affects the quality of their science and engineering.

LANL and LLNL were managed solely by the University of California for many decades, but in 2004 Congress ordered that the contract for managing the two labs be re-opened to competitive bidding. As a result, two independent LLCs that include both the University of California and Bechtel Corp. were awarded contracts. SNL has been managed since 1993 by the Sandia Corp., a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corp.

Some laboratory staff had raised concerns that the introduction of a private company into the management of LANL and LLNL might negatively affect worker morale or that management may not act in the public interest. However, the Research Council committee said staff members continue to show a strong commitment to their work, and the laboratory directors' main objective remains to manage the labs in the public interest.

The quality of science and engineering work at the laboratories depends on the ability of the labs to attract and retain high-quality scientists and engineers and not impede their performance, the committee emphasized. It applauded the broadening of the laboratory missions into non-nuclear areas and work for other agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, because non-nuclear areas of research potentially increase the laboratories' appeal to top-quality scientists and engineers while also serving important national security missions. The committee recommended that Congress, while still recognizing that maintenance of the nuclear weapons stockpile remains the labs' core mission, endorse and support their evolving national security mission.

The "breakdown of trust" between NNSA and the labs is most prominent at LANL, where past failures in safety and security attracted much national attention, but the breakdown is also felt clearly at the other labs, leading to an aversion to risk and a potential bias against experimental work, the committee found. It said a perception exists among staff and managers that NNSA is micromanaging the labs, and the report cites a case where NNSA headquarters tried to overrule a laboratory's best scientific judgment about how to carry out a scientific task.

Safety and security systems at the laboratories have been strengthened to the point where they no longer need special attention, the committee found. It said that an understanding is needed to rebalance the relationship and rebuild trust between NNSA and lab management. The committee also recommended that NNSA reduce reporting and administrative burdens on the laboratories' leadership and free them to establish strategic science and engineering direction at the laboratories.

Manufacturers have been hiring more consistently than other employers, for jobs with better-than-average pay. They just had their best month of growth in five years. And more factory output has raised demand in some other industries, such as shipping, leading to further hiring.

"The manufacturing sector is on a tear," said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics.

It's an optimistic theme that serves President Barack Obama's political needs. On Wednesday, Obama traveled to Milwaukee to salute a company that brought jobs back to the United States. The president has promoted the nation's manufacturing base as an engine of growth and as evidence of a recovering economy.

No one thinks manufacturing will return to its 1950s peak. After all, the factory sector now makes up barely one-tenth of the economy.

But since the recession ended more than 2? years ago, factories have been contributing disproportionately to the recovery in hiring and the overall economy.

A big reason, economists say, is that individuals and businesses are making major purchases they delayed during the Great Recession and its aftermath. Consumers are buying more cars and appliances. Companies are investing in industrial machinery and computers.

The release of that pent-up demand gives manufacturing a kick that isn't visible in some other corners of the economy. Manufacturing was hit particularly hard by the recession. Consumers postponed purchases of cars, refrigerators and flat-screen TVs, even as they continued to visit doctors, get haircuts and pay utility bills.

"Manufacturing has punched above its weight, but that's because it was punched in the stomach in the recession," Michael Montgomery, a senior economist at IHS Global Insight, said.

Factory output got off to a robust start this year, and it ended last year with the fastest growth in five years, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday.

Those were the best back-to-back monthly performances since summer 2009, when the recession ended, according to Jonathan Basile, an economist at Credit Suisse.

Manufacturing is delivering an outsize benefit to the economy in key ways:

? JOBS:

About 9 percent of the nation's jobs are in manufacturing. But last year, factories added 13 percent of new jobs. And in January, about one-fifth of the 243,000 net jobs the economy created were in manufacturing.

Factory growth has also helped to increase hiring in other industries such as shipping, warehousing, department store sales and auto sales. Railroad operators such as Union Pacific have stepped up hiring as their shipments of cars, machinery and other equipment have climbed.

The hiring has boosted struggling Midwestern states such as Ohio and Michigan, which will likely be battleground states in the presidential election.

George Mokrzan, an economist at Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Bank, said those two states have added a greater percentage of jobs since the recession ended than the nation as a whole.

? WAGES:

Average hourly pay for factory workers making durable goods, such as autos, was $20.15 in January, according to the Labor Department. That's above the average of $19.37 for the broad service sector, meaning that each new manufacturing job, on average, fuels more consumer spending than does the equivalent new service-sector jobs.

The service sector, which employs roughly 90 percent of the private-sector workforce, includes everything from restaurants and hotels and retailers to financial service firms and construction companies.

? CONFIDENCE:

As Clint Eastwood's Super Bowl halftime ad for Chrysler ("Our second half is about to begin.") showed, Americans are thought to respond more emotionally to a rebound in manufacturing than in other sectors. The perception that American manufacturing is healthy again could boost confidence in the economy, some analysts say.

Jeffrey Bergstrand, a finance professor at Notre Dame University, calls it "factory nostalgia" but says that it is "economically legitimate."

"It reminds us of the period of the greatest growth we had in the U.S. economy," Bergstrand said. "It's also ... an association with the boom in the middle class, (when) they were all sharing in that economic boom."

Still, economists caution that expanding factories can do only so much to reduce unemployment. That's because factories have increasingly relied on automation and other advances to produce more goods with fewer people.

Many economists expect manufacturing to keep growing faster than the broader economy for the rest of the year. It's not clear how long that will continue.

"This is nothing more than the manufacturing sector recovering faster because it got hammered worse," Montgomery said.
