Verizon may cut what's left of Alltel data starting January 10th

Alltel customers brought under the Verizon umbrella have been getting more and more signals that it's time to let go of that legacy phone. The latest red flag is a letter that Droid-Life understands is making its way to holdout customers. According to one copy, Verizon will start shutting down the remnants of Alltel's data service on or near January 10th, 2013. Alltel's mobile data should be completely inert after April that year -- and those still clinging to the past will be down to basic phone calls and SMS until they get Verizon-blessed devices. At least corporate customers are getting incentives to cross the divide, so you can't accuse Verizon of forgetting to use the carrot along with the stick. We'll admit that we aren't exactly mourning the eventual loss ourselves: customers by that point will have had four years to make the leap, which in this era can feel like an eternity.

Blue Heron Moon Webtips: The Power of Pins

I've got to tell you...as a consumer, I am hooked on Pinterest. Pinterest allows me to make a scrapbook of my interests. I can keep track of a reading list, my favorite music, projects for home and family, future purchases and products, things I'd like to do for the holidays, places I want to go...the list goes on and on.

And I have noticed that men are just as likely to have and maintain a Pinterest page as women are. The benefits of Pinterest for small businesses are enormous. But first---Pinterest is not another Facebook. Unless you have a pin that I think will add to my scrapbook I won't follow you or repin you onto my Pinterest page. Give me a great picture of a product I'm dreaming of or something that will help solve a problem I have and I'll pin it to my scrapbook. Give me an idea that I can add to my own project list and I'll repin it to my page. That pin will have a link back to your page and/or website. That pin, if it has enough value, will be repinned over and over again; hitting audiences that your small business never dreamed of.

A picture is worth a thousand words. And on Pinterest your picture can have a major impact.

Hangouts come to Gmail, let you launch virtual meetings from your inbox

Google's been adding a lot of features lately to get us to Hangout, from providing digital moustaches to scheduling virtual soirees. Now, the company's aiming to get folks video conferencing from their inbox. That's right, you can now start a Hangout with up to nine friends or colleagues straight from Gmail with a click of a button. Users can expect better quality as compared to Gmail's old peer-to-peer video chats, and it provides access to people with an Android or iOS device and those on Google+ in a web browser. The new feature has already started making its way to users, and the rollout will continue over the next few weeks. Still not ready to mix your Hangouts with email just yet? Perhaps the pair of videos after the break will persuade you.

Maybe NBA players competing at Olympics isn?t a good idea

LONDON ? Here at the Basketball Pavilion, as the U.S. men?s team beats up on France, two questions come to mind:

How about that funky ball?

And, why are all these NBA guys playing?

Well, the ball is actually quite nice, in my opinion ? a yellow and orange leather orb that looks a bit like a new Gucci handbag. When it spins, it resembles a rotating cheese potato.

But the NBA guys ? for both the USA and France ? I don?t know about that.

The Americans toyed with the French men, casually beating them to a pulp, 98-71. The event was more like a McDonald?s All Star game than true competition.

With America?s Russell Westbrook running crazily up and down the floor and Chris Paul trying a three-part air-dribble that even the Globetrotters wouldn?t allow, I have to wonder if it?s a good thing to have these multi-millionaires playing for something other than dollars.

It?s not like they?re overtly not trying. Carmelo Anthony ended up in a photographer?s lap chasing a loose ball in the first half. And old Kobe Bryant had his poker face on.

But Kevin Durant dribbled so much in one series that he ended up sliding to the floor, self-checking himself to death.

Wouldn?t young players who have been together as a U.S. team for months and months be better than these quasi-All Star Games? Other than Tony Parker, the French team had no one of the U.S. players? skill set. But France?s Florent Pietrus, Ronny Turiaf, Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum, and Kevin Seraphim are all NBA players, as well. Just not stars.

Yes, the Olympics used to be played with, quote, amateurs ? even if the Soviets and other Eastern Bloc players were often old, true, pros ? and it?s virtually impossible to determine the boundaries of ?amateurism.?

But playing with young men ? nobody older than, say, 22 ? might be a more enjoyable Olympic treat. Age group, that?s all.

We have the NBA Championships, the World Championships, and other championships.

Make this different. Like with Kobe Bryant?s kids.

Next-gen iPhone parts purportedly leak again, get assembled sans innards

Engadget writes, Ready for another supposed look at the next-gen Apple iPhone? Matching up with previous leaks we've reported on, the elongated iPhone body with a miniaturized docking port and brushed metal back has appeared again, this time courtesy of iLab Factory. While many of its parts look astoundingly similar to what we've already seen, this is the first time we've gotten a solid look at it fully assembled from all angles -- well, aside from the missing SIM card holder. While most of its all-important innards are clearly absent, this assembly does come complete with what appears to be the locking...

PFT: Brees looks 'outstanding' in first practice

stalinAP

Every new coach wants to put his own stamp on a team.

Mike Mularkey apparently wants to imprint his with a sledge hammer.

The Jaguars coach told Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union he planned to fine players $10,000 if they talk about injuries to the media.

Mularkey delivered that news in last night?s team meeting.

?They saw a lot of numbers last night,? Mularkey said. ?One of them, it was up there more than once, was about speaking about injuries. [Head trainer]?Mike Ryan talked about it, I had it up there more than once. Coordinators were told prior to that meeting every two weeks, two to three weeks I want you to stand in front of that room and tell them we?re not going to talk about injuries.

?Even if mom says, ?How are you feeling?? If you tell you mom, go call coach Mularkey. I?m going overboard.?

Mularkey wasn?t totally serious about the fines for talking to parents, but apparently to everyone else.

?Anything I know about a guy, anything I know is hurting on him, any comment he makes will play into how they attack a team or a position,? Mularkey said. ?I just don?t think it?s anybody else?s business. ? If I feel like it?s going to jeopardize us or compromise us, I will not talk about specific injuries. Right now we?re really not in a position where I don?t feel free to talk about them because I feel pretty good about our team right now. But I will be the only voice.?

Listen, that?s fine to play tough guy. The Jaguars could use a little order (as long as it doesn?t come with Jack Del Rio?s ax).

But maybe, just maybe, they?d be better off getting their quarterback to quit looking so skittish in the pocket, or having Justin Blackmon call a cab, or trying to get their best player into camp on time.

Call me crazy, but I think any of those things might be more important to the Jaguars improving more so than making sure somebody doesn?t tell Vito Stellino their ankle hurts.

Senate passes cuts for all but richest Americans

(AP) ? The Senate has debated, sniped and voted on the politically fraught issue of tax cuts, and next week it'll be the House's turn. Still, Americans won't know until after the November elections how much more of their paychecks will go to the government next year.

Turning both houses of Congress into a campaign stage on one of the defining issues of the presidential and congressional races, Republicans and Democrats are putting each other on record over which Americans, if any, should receive an extension of former President George W. Bush's income tax cuts.

The Senate opened the drama Wednesday with surprise debates and passage of a Democratic bill fashioned on President Barack Obama's proposal to extend the income tax cuts to all but the wealthiest Americans through 2013. It passed even though the measure stands no chance of surviving the Republican-led House. Meanwhile, the Senate rejected a GOP amendment to extend the cuts to all taxpayers. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, intends to bring up that measure in his chamber next week.

So the matter was a nearly certain stalemate even before Democratic leader Harry Reid and Republican leader Mitch McConnell abruptly agreed to vote on two measures, spent the day accusing each other of playing politics and the last 20 minutes trying to get the last word.

"We know this is about the election," McConnell said. At one point he resolved to let Reid close the debate but then changed his mind to dispute a point.

"Here we go again," Reid muttered. Some of McConnell's remarks, he added, were "poppycock."

Despite the drama, the issue carries great significance for voters deeply worried about their finances as the economy struggles to recover from recession. Which way the debate goes could mean a big difference: an average of $1,600 a year in taxes for 114 million middle-class families, according to the White House.

The electorate is deeply divided over the tax cut issue.

A CBS News/New York Times poll conducted July 11-16 found that nearly half of Americans, about 49 percent, would prefer that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts continue only for those households earning less than $250,000 a year, as Obama and congressional Democrats want. An additional 17 percent think the cuts should expire for everyone. And 27 percent say the tax cuts should be continued for all taxpayers, as Republicans want.

Wednesday's Senate vote on the $250 billion Democratic bill was a near-party line 51-40 tally, with Vice President Joe Biden presiding over the chamber in the unlikely event his vote was needed to break a tie. Minutes earlier, senators voted 54-45 to reject the rival Republican package that would have included the wealthiest Americans in the tax reductions.

"With the Senate's vote, the House Republicans are now the only people left in Washington holding hostage the middle-class tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans and nearly every small business owner," Obama said in a written statement.

The vote served as a counterpoint to the GOP-run House, which next week will pass tax cuts nearly identical to the $405 billion Republican plan the Senate rejected Wednesday.

Republicans say raising taxes on higher earners saps money from business owners who would otherwise create jobs. Democrats say that's overblown.

"The House will vote next week to stop that tax hike, and until the Senate does the same, the threat to our economy remains," Boehner said in a statement.

Though the House and Senate votes are mostly for show, they pose challenges to some lawmakers in tough re-election campaigns.

The Democratic bill would dramatically boost the estate tax, which would be widely unpopular in farming, ranching and high cost-of-living states. It also would increase levies on dividends and capital gains, which are relied on by many elderly people.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who is in a difficult re-election race, announced she had introduced a bill preventing the estate tax from rising next year. She issued a news release to that effect just minutes after voting for the Democratic bill, which would let estate taxes rise in 2013.

Under the Democratic measure, individuals earning more than $200,000 and couples making over $250,000 would see their top rates rise from 33 percent and 35 percent today to 36 percent and 39.6 percent in January.

The Democratic bill would also boost the top tax rate paid by people who inherit estates to 55 percent, exempting the first $1 million in an estate's value. The GOP measure would maintain today's 35 percent top rate and would not tax the first $5.12 million of an estate's value.

In fresh figures released this week by Republicans, Congress' nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation estimated that the Democratic provision would affect 55,200 estates next year, compared with 3,600 who would face estate taxes under the GOP plan.

Democrats would impose top tax rates next year of 20 percent on dividends and capital gains, two sources of income enjoyed disproportionately by the wealthy. The GOP top rate would be 15 percent.

The GOP bill ignores some tax credits for low- and middle-income families that Democrats want to extend for college costs; for some low-income couples and large working families; and for families with children.

Important tips of PPC advertising networks for home-based business

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

There is nothing better than sitting in the vicinity of the house and earning loads of money. Well, this does appear to be a far-fetched, but holds true in today?s virtual world. Actually, internet has made entrepreneurs out of common man, youngsters and oldies, housewives and any other person that you can think of. The most promising aspect of home-based business online is that the investment is low as you need not spend a lot to open a store or an office but you just need to launch your website (and that too is a ?free? affair). Secondly, you need not spend thousands on advertising online as most of the advertising tools come free; nevertheless, there are few that do cost something but usually that amount comes out to be so less that it really does not matter as the revenue generated through it is far more than expected. One such exemplary example of paid option is PPC advertising network.

Actually, PPC advertising network is considered to be far superior to any other mode of advertising as this medium is usually responsible for gaining instant visibility and improving sales ratio. Apart from that, PPC advertising also brings in search engine ranking and for any home-based business; and a search engine ranking is something that will raise the popularity bar as well as will attract more clientele.

What are the prime assets of PPC advertising network that will make it successful?

Since the desire of all home-based business is to grow, therefore the promotion mode adopted will desire a lot of input to make it a successful option. If a webmaster is making use of PPC advertising network for promoting his/her home based business, then there are numerous aspects that one needs to look into for gaining success. The first thing that you need to do here is to pay heed to the headline aka title of the advertisement. Headline is the first thing that draws attention to any advertisement and therefore it becomes essential to make it as catchy as possible. For making the title more noticeable, you can start by making use of capital letters or bold italics. Another thing that will make it more catchy is to include figure factors like ?the three most important tips? or ?5 factors? etc. These figures will bring instant viewership for the advertisement as they make the ad appear more important.

Apart from the title, of course the content makes a hell lot of difference to your PPC advertising network as the content of the advertisement is another factor that beings in traffic to your business. The considerations to make here is to include keyword, link to your website, promising propositions as well as great descript about your business. Your ad content should promise what you can deliver and should portray the same in the best light. Do not make the mistake of making false claims and promises as this will definitely break your visitors trust and will definitely lead to banning of your advertisement.

Syrians in Iraq tell of shells 'like rain' and nightly hell

Having fled a city where shells fell "like rain" and children died in front of them, Syrian refugees spoke of the hell that would erupt every night as troops sought to retake their border town.

Wearing a dirt-covered dishdasha, or traditional Arab robe, his face pale from exhaustion, Ahmed Saleh Hanoush sat on the floor of a school-turned-dormitory for refugees, fighting back tears.

"My son was hit by a shell when he was in our garden speaking on the phone," the 53-year-old said of the 17-year-old who suffered chest, arm and leg wounds from the Syrian army's bombardment aimed at winning back control of Albu Kamal, a town on the Iraq-Syria border held by rebels.

"I took him to an emergency clinic," Hanoush said, his hands placed on the heads of two of his daughters, "but there was nothing there to clean his wounds."

Pausing for a moment, the father of five said: "He died in front of my eyes. I tried, but I could not do anything for him."

Hanoush is one of around 750 Syrians who crossed the border from Albu Kamal into Al-Qaim in Iraq after the Baghdad government had a change of heart and decided to allow in refugees from its strife-hit neighbour.

The Syrian border town has been short of food and medicine for the past two months, as government forces and rebel troops battled.

Opposition forces finally took Albu Kamal last week, and it is now the only one of three main border crossings between Iraq and Syria that is in rebel hands.

The Syrian army has been shelling it heavily on a near-nightly basis, and a medic in Albu Kamal who spoke to AFP by telephone said the onslaught had killed nearly 30 people in the past week.

Dr Anas Fadhel at Al-Qaim hospital said the facility had also treated 10 Syrians wounded in the shelling.

"I lived in terror for three weeks after my husband Ahmed left for Damascus to get medical supplies," refugee Maysam Umm Khalid, a 35-year-old mother-of-three, told AFP.

"He never came back, and his phone has been off since then.

"I did not know what to do during the night. The night was for the bombs, which were hitting the city like rain. It was a hell that would erupt for several hours, before calming down and then erupting again."

An official in Al-Qaim said around 750 Syrians had crossed the 600-kilometre (375-mile) border between the two countries after Baghdad announced on Tuesday it would set up refugee camps.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said 250 held dual Iraqi-Syrian nationality, and most were women.

Iraq initially resisted accepting refugees from the conflict, saying it would only allow Iraqis fleeing the violence to cross the frontier, but reversed its decision on Monday and has since allocated $42 million to build camps for refugees.

It has also set up a committee headed by the immigration minister and including representatives of the interior, defence and transport ministries, as well as the Iraqi Red Crescent and the two border provinces of Anbar and Nineveh.

Until the camps are ready, however, the interim arrangements are spartan.

Three schools in Al-Qaim have been converted into makeshift refugee camps.

At the school housing Hanoush and his family, refugees' belongings are strewn all over the courtyard as they wait in the boiling Iraqi summer.

The police and army search everything entering or leaving the school, and have set up a security checkpoint, barring Syrians from leaving and only allowing their Iraqi relatives to visit.

Many Sunni tribes have long lived in the area where the border now lies, so residents of Al-Qaim have relatives from blood and marriage living in Albu Kamal.

"We escaped the sectarian violence in Homs," said Abdul Nasser Abu Jamal, referring to the central Syrian city, "and we went to Albu Kamal because it is far from all the other cities."

"But when the city was being shelled and we heard the decision from the Iraqi government that it would let us in, we decided to come."

He surveyed his surroundings grimly: "I wish we had not come -- this is a place for rubbish, not for people to live."

Another former Homs native who passed through Albu Kamal, a 25-year-old who declined to be identified, said of his new residence: "We were in a big prison (in Albu Kamal), and now we are in a small prison."

"There we could die in a few minutes if we were hit by a shell, but here it seems we will die slowly."

Google search nerds up, adds fullbutton scientific calculator

Search is Google's bread and butter, so it stands to reason the company would want to cram in as much universal functionality to that unassuming text box as possible. After having integrated graphing capabilities this past Winter, the Mountain View gang's at it again, expanding the breadth of its moneymaker with a full, pop-up scientific calculator. Users that input the beginnings of an equation from either the desktop site or mobile version (landscape only) will instantly see a 32-button layout appear in the space below, mapped for all the mathematical functions your left brain can't handle alone. The calculator can also be triggered by voice commands, so those of you averse to thumb-smashing will have the luxury of barking those algebraic equations straight into your handset. It's live now for the testing, but we warn you, it's no replacement for that game-filled TI-83.
