The Atari 2600 had some incredibly shitty arcade ports like Pac-Man. Other consoles like Colecovision were more powerful with better ports, but they were never as popular as the Atari 2600.
I don't know much about the Sega Master System to know if it was more powerful than the NES or not.
The Sega Genesis however was somewhat more powerful than the SNES, and yet the SNES won.
The N64 was clearly more powerful than the PS1, yet the PS1 dominated.
The next race between PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox, the PS2 dominated but was the least powerful. It is very easy to see that the PS2 was inferior because exclusive Gamecube and Xbox games like Rogue Squadron and Splinter Cell were well beyond the capabilities of anything the PS2 could do. Splinter Cell was eventually ported to PS2 and was pretty heavily toned down graphically (as was Resident Evil 4 when ported from Cube to PS2).
This gen I believe the PS3 and Xbox360 are about equal, but they both lost to the Wii which is barely more powerful than the original Xbox.
