Boston University Physical Therapist Offers Online Seminar on Gait ...

Expert Advice for People Touched by Parkinson?s Disease and Health Professionals

WHAT:? ?Gait, Balance, Falls and Parkinson's Disease? is the third in a series of free, interactive online and phone seminars, or PD ExpertBriefings hosted by the Parkinson?s Disease Foundation (PDF). ?It will focus on ways people living with Parkinson?s can improve balance and prevent falls. PD ExpertBriefings provide people with Parkinson's disease, families and health professionals with first-hand access to the leaders in Parkinson's disease care and research. ?Health care professionals may apply for continuing education credits.

WHO: ?Terry Ellis, P.T., Ph.D., N.C.S., is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training at Boston University (BU) College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College. She is also Director for the BU Center for Neurorehabilitation. The Parkinson?s Disease Foundation ? (PDF?) supports the scientific research and ideas that will improve the lives and futures of people who are touched by Parkinson?s disease. ?Since its founding in 1957, PDF has invested more than $136 million in research, education and advocacy programs.

WHY: ?As many as one million Americans live with Parkinson's disease.? They have twice the risk for falling as their peers. ?Falls can result in minor or serious injuries, impacting a person?s quality of life. ?Research suggests that exercise and physical therapy may lessen a person?s risk of falls. ?This PD ExpertBriefing will provide evidence-based strategies for coping with gait and balance problems, to lessen a person?s risk of falls.
