Mayor Opens 17 'Cooling Centers' in Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - Seventeen 'cooling centers' in Buffalo opened Tuesday, and will remain open through Thursday, June 21, to help senior citizens and others escape the heat wave, Mayor Byron W. Brown announced.

The facilities are:

  • CAO, 422 Pratt, 9AM-8pm
  • Senior Ctr. at Richmond Street and Summer, 9AM-8PM
  • Delavan-Grider Community Ctr.-877 East Delavan, 9AM-8PM
  • Edward Saunders Community Ctr.-2777 Bailey Ave., 9AM-9 PM
  • The Belle Center, 104 Maryland Street, ?9AM-9 PM
  • Friends to the Elderly, Inc. (Dorothy Collier Center) 118 East Utica, 9AM-5:30PM
  • Gloria J. Parks Community Center, 3242 Main Street,? 9AM-6:30 PM
  • North Buffalo Community Center,? 203 Sanders Road, 9AM-8PM
  • Northwest Community Center, 155 Lawn Avenue, 9AM-8PM
  • Old First Ward Community Center, 62 Republic Street, 9AM-8PM

Eight of the city's 11 splash pads are open now through the end of the school year?from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m.? Starting Saturday, June 23, splash pads will be open 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day through Labor Day. Three of the city's splash pads are currently under construction.

Splash pads are turned on at the following locations.

  • Cazenovia (by Caz casino)
  • Centennial (foot of Porter Avenue next to pool in Lasalle Park)
  • Kensington (corner of Grider and Kensington next to pool)
  • Lanigan (Fulton between Chicago and Louisiana)
  • SAllison (Reese Street, next to pool)
  • Cchiller (Sprenger Avenue side)
  • Lincoln (end of Quincy Street)
  • Masten (Best Street next to JBW Stadium)

Splash pads and pools in the city traditionally open on July 1.
