Computers in the Cab ? Truckers Using Technology

Now more than ever, it is important for truck drivers to utilize modern technology in order to keep up with demand, cut costs and deliver their freight on time. Truckers are under a lot of pressure and stress to deliver their load quickly and with minimal errors. In today?s rough economy, the focus is on efficiency and saving money. Modern technology such as laptops, GPS services, and WiFi can drastically increase efficiency, saving time and money.

Gone are the days when truck drivers needed to stop at a payphone to get directions or information about their next haul. Today, major trucking companies utilize on-board computers to offer instructions and track freight. using satellite technology, these on-board computers have the ability to monitor the truck?s speed, stops and idle time. while the on-board computer is a great way to keep semis on schedule, it doesn?t offer drivers the flexibility they need for communication and entertainment during rest time.

Of course, most people have a cell phone for mobile communication. This is no different for truck drivers. A cell phone with a headset for hands-free communication is essential in this age of constant communication, especially for truck drivers who need to be in contact with the home office without having to waste time by stopping at a payphone.

Many truck drivers purchase their own laptop computer for use during down time or at rest stops. using a laptop for Internet browsing or even earning a college degree online is a great way to spend those off hours. Many laptops come with a webcam installed, making it an easy way to keep in contact with family or friends during those long hauls. You can upload pictures from different parts of the country to a website for everyone to see. Photos are a great way to keep your family informed on where you?ve been and what you?ve seen.

Furthermore, if you?re a truck driver who is operating his or her own business, keeping a laptop with you at all times will allow you to manage your operations while on the road. This saves time and allows you to organize your files, find potential customers and increase your profits all without having to be at the office. while on the road, you?ll need to find a WiFi hotspot or use a cellular modem or PC card to enable you to get online from virtually anywhere.

A computer in the cab, outfitted with a DVD player, can become your mobile entertainment center. while offering all the necessities you need for business, using a computer for your entertainment (to watch movies, listen to music, etc) will save money and give you something entertaining to do in between driving hours. After all, a trucker spends many long hours alone on the road, so make your big rig your home away from home by using modern technology to stay connected to your loved ones.
